Friend : Don Dashney (VE2SH/VE3RM)

I am very saddened to report Don
Dashney's passing on Wednesday February
12th 2014.

As the Montreal Amateur Radio Club Code
and Theory Classes lead instructor from
the 1960s well into the 1990s Don was
responsible for helping well over a
thousand people successfully pass the
DOT/DOC examinations and qualify for
their Certificate of Proficiency in
Radio.

The exams were formidable back then. You
had to know your stuff or you failed and
had to come back. The exams consisted of
several elements, including drawing
eight schematic (not block) diagrams and
an oral quizzing by a real live Radio
Inspector who had forgotten more than
any of us knew about radio. This was no
volunteer examiner! The Code test was 10
WPM and you had to get 100% or you
failed.

Both my wife (VE2KW) and I are graduates
of the MARC Code and Theory classes.

Don was born and educated on Ottawa but
studied electrical engineering at McGill
University in Montreal. He was the Chief
Broadcast Engineer at CBC Montreal.
After his retirement he moved to
Hawkesbury Ontario and continued to helo
newcomers learn and pass the amateur
exams. In 2011 it was my distinct honour
to present Don with a Lifetime Pass to
the New England Amateur Radio Festival,
aka NEAR-Fest in recognition of his
incredible contribution to the
advancement of the hobby over a 50 year
span in Eastern Canada.

Don also introduced me to Collins Radio
equipment and taught me how to operate,
maintain and repair this wonderful
equipment.

We thank Don and will always remember
him every time we get on the air because
if it were not for him we probably would
have not become licensed.

R.I.P. friend.
