(I'm writing this because it surprised me to find that no one had already created an entry for Duke but I don't really know enough to do more than make a few comments.) 'Duke', K5GHD, was a fixture in the Austin (Tx) ham radio community for many years. I grew up in the 1960s in a small (then) town about 30 miles from Austin and during the years that I was around central Texas Duke was one of the people you thought of when thinking about central Texas hams. My recollection is that Duke was a professional antenna/tower person (he did the antenna work for my friend Sidney Purser, WD5CPZ (SK), in the very early 1980s) but from what I've found on-line ... previous to that Duke was an Austin Fireman (I believe he retired from the FD). /// Duke's son (W.E. Campbell, Jr.) died in 1987 and his wife, Mary Aldona Cook Campbell, passed away 5 years after Duke in Dec 2004 (her Obituary mentioned that Duke got that nickname as a result of having been a boxer at one time).
