Friend : Tom Nutting (W1TAT)

Some of you may have had the pleasure of talking to Tom on the Nighthawks Net at 7.255 MHz where he was a Net Controller. Or had your CSCE signed by Tom in Holyoke Mass as he was also a VE. He was always eager to help out and encouraged most of us locally to upgrade our licenses and be proud of the accomplishment. Tom was a ham in every sense of the word. I remember the day he signed my CSCE when I passed the General Class, I don't know who was happier Tom or Myself. You can view Tom's QSL card on the Nighthawks web page he is in the Net Controller collection. (you'll have to cut and paste the address sorry) qsl.net/n4jgo/frame_body.htm

Whiskey One Tom's Always There - No truer phonetics were ever spoken.

We first had the pleasure of "meeting" Tom Nutting W1TAT on 7.255 mhz in the fall of 1999. This is when a net known as the Nighthawks was first introduced. Within the first couple of months, Tom became a Net Controller for the group. Eventually, he became the "main man". Everyone who checked in with Tom on the net was made to feel welcome and part of the Nighthawk "family". The net is primarily focused on mobile/qrp operation and Tom would "break a leg" to pull in a weak mobile. And you could search far and wide to find a more polite ham operator. It didn't matter if you just wanted to check in and say HI - Tom was always there; it didn't matter if you wanted to ramble on and on, Tom was always there; or if you needed a signal/audio report, Tom was always there. He always had a kind word for everyone. If you just needed to get away from the outside world and relax on ham radio - you knew you could count on Tom to be ready to listen to you. He was a great guy and a true friend and he truly truly loved amateur radio. Yes, he is sorely missed on the Nighthawks and his shoes are hard to fill but we know that he "rides along" with us every night.
