I knew John Clements, WB5SAL, from when we met at 'HamCom' (the Dallas/Ft Worth area hamfest in June each year) in 1987 until his death in the summer of 2011. /// (if I get any of this wrong - my apologies) John was from Pearsall, a little town out-in-the rough country (mesquite, sand, oil and some cattle) SSW of San Antonio along IH35. /// When I first met John it was when he and two other hams from Little Rock (Ark) decided to come to 'HamCom' in 1987 (back then it was being held in Arlington near the Six Flags Over Texas amusement park between Dallas & Ft Worth). /// John had a degree (perhaps more than one) in (I believe) Chemical Engineering and he was working for one of the big aluminum companies. I believe that, over-the-years, his career had caused him to move two-or-three times. /// John was part of the 'gang' that 'forced' me to go to the Dayton Hamfest with them five times during the late 1980s up through the mid 1990s and so whenever I think of John the rest of the 'Dayton crew' also comes-to-mind (and I smile). /// By the early 2000s John had moved back to Texas, to Corpus Christi, and he seemed very pleased with the area (other than grumbling about their lack of decent InterNet access). You'll find presentations on-line showing the high-speed multi-mode data network design that John got interested in (he gave several presentations in the Corpus Christi area). /// Sometime, after moving to Corpus Christi, John retired and so had more time to do things that he wanted to do. /// John married (he met the lady at his church in Corpus Christi) somewhat late-in-life but he seemed very pleased with the change. /// I don't know the medical details but something happened to John's lungs and it was due to complications arising from a lung transplant (in Houston) that took his life in July of 2011. /// John was a fine example of what a guy from a small town in central Texas should be like; honest, courteous, intelligent, and just a generally nice guy (as I write this I can hear John's twangy voice ... you would never confuse him with someone from back-east). /// Adios amigo. /// Paul N. Nix, WB5AGF (05 March 2016)
