Well Built and works Great!  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I used to work Gene KG4NBL/M (sk) on 160 on the Century club net. I marveled at his consistently strong signal. I worked Gene in over 20 different states.
He explained his setup (He was an Over the Road Trucker) and that he was using a Hi-Q antenna. I had not heard of them before, so I did some research... years went by as life happened, and one day I hit a horse at night going 70 MPH in my 2004 F-250 2004 F-250. I was OK, thanks to seatbelts, but the truck wasn't. I ended up replacing it with a 2014 F250. I started over with my HF install and this time I decided to go with the Hi-Q. It is a big sturdy antenna. You WILL need a strong mount... I first tried a stake mount antenna, but on rough roads it fatigued the metal... I worked with Charlie W6HIQ and he suggested Breedlove Mounts. Charlie insisted if I mounted it in the truck bed, it must be raised at least a foot to get it over the bed rail. I ordered a Breedlove bed mount, and a 14" Delrin HF insulator. I added the Hi-Q GQD (Giant Quick Disconnect) and EB-6 Top Hat and used inductive matching to get a good match to my rig (IC-7000). It works great! I've never had such good reports with my mobile before. I can't say enough good things about Charlie and Hi-Q. Highly Recommended!

The finest mobile antenna made.  Time owned: more than 12 months
I am a NCS on the MMSN and I kept having contact with a station in FL and asked what he was using. He stated he had a Hi-Q antenna mounted on his corvette and it works great! I looked at the website and knew I had to have the milspec version of the Piranha 5/6-160. I called and Charlie answered the phone and he listened to me babble and finally took my order. It was not until almost the end of the conversation that Charlie informed me that his bride had recently passed away and he would be leaving for a month or so. I was so incredibly touched by his patience with me and was so grateful to him. I finished the order and within the week that gorgeous piece of engineering appeared on my front porch. I mounted this beauty on a stake mount I had purchased from Breedlove Mounts in Gastonia, NC and was off and running. I cannot believe how well this antenna works. I am running an Icom M802 mobile marine radio with a MARS mod in my Toyota tundra and it is the setup of dreams. This is without question the best money you can spend for HF communications on the planet.

Update  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I replaced my unun and have my LDG100Pro in line. I tune in bi-pass mode, then do a quick tune to match impedance. 1:1 now from 10-80 meters. I need to stress to get the SWR as low as possible in bi-pass mode first, otherwise all you have is a heavy whip with a capacity hat. All excellent reports checking into nets. 80m band is very noisy right now, but 40 always ROCKS! Again, Thanks Charlie!
73 ya'all.

HI-Q Piranha Mobile  Time owned: more than 12 months
I have had the HI-Q Piranha antenna install on my pickup truck since Jun of 2014 the 160/6r. And it out preforms all others antenna, I have had in mobile operation.I have had different type of antenna in the pass. I will say all of them. The HI-Q Piranha antenna work very well on 160 meter mobile and all the rest of the bands. I have video to prove it on web site. Just look up my call sign on QRZ and you see video link to you tube. I'm also running a 500 amp with it remotely and a Kenwood ts-2000. It works great even on low power. I highly recommend this antenna to any one whom wants to setup mobile hf in their truck or car. This should be your only choice in mobile HF antenna and you will never need to buy another. Thank you and have a wonderful day. See you on the radio when I mobile-ing down the road.

Suitably Impressed  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I feel I can give a fair dinkum report on the performance of the HI-Q type, Fixed coil antenna,
I have been active, and playing with HF MOTORISED Antenna Mobile for 21+ years,
so Have used ALL the available HAM & Commercial rigs, remote and not, and just about all the available Motorised Type of HF mobile, EXCEPT an Aussie RODA & a Scorpion, Soooo, this 5" Piranha is really something else, I have tried and used all types of cap hat and stinger length combos over a 21 yrs period, hours and hours and hours and hours of stuffin about with different combos, well with this 5" ( FULL 125mm.5" Coil) not stated as a 4" (100mm) and coil is 80mm dia etc, FULL 5" Coil, with a 2.65Mtr 5mm base/2.5mm tip + ball, Hard ground tapered one piece whip, this setup rocks, I find with the FULL SIZE 5" Coil and NO Cap Hat, I get a better performance then with a cap hat, coupled to a TS-480 HX, no issues working European DX Mobile on 7Mhz at day break from the East Coast of QLD @ a 100klms per hour,
it would take some SPECIAL TYPE of antenna to get OVER this critter, I would say the 6-80/160 Mil Spec HI-Q Piranha would be it's Master,
after so long HF mobile with motorised HF antennas, you get a feel, Larrys SHORTY 3, is NO SLOUCH either, and for a short antenna, makes a presence,
one thing I have noticed over the years HF Mobile with HI-Q antennas, very seldom you get a signal report, they call you in, pass the nicities, and say, well your strong, you are mobile right?
I have also installed 12 antennas other then my own, and 8 of them were HI-Q, I make sure I use SLIP ON FERRITE beads to isolate the DX & Control wires,(12 beads, 1 1/4" long) plus I build a HF Choke from Steve G3TXQ'a site for maximum isolation on the transmission line, separate earth tags for EACH device to Direct Chassis gnd, and Bob's ur Aunti

Thank you very much Charlie Gyenes

GOB SMACKED  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
This is my second HIQ masterpiece from Charlie having previously used a 5-160. When my new Pirahna 6-80R arrived i was so impressed with the packing which was so carefully done,Thanks Charlie. When i pulled the antenna out of its shipping tube i was absolutely gob smacked with the quality and precision of machining and assembly. This is a military spec serious piece of hardware which simply oozes quality! I had a strong bracket made up for my tow bar and the GQD made installation seemless. The shunt coil was assembled and installed as described on the HIQ website and the EB-6 cap hat was a sight to behold at the top of the antenna! Only 6.5'tall and the signals on 40m were outstanding both ways around VK on a dead band. On 20m DX LP EU came back first call and the SNR has to be heard top be believed. Once again this new series of mobile antenna has solved all the problems of Don Johnstons original screwdriver design. There is nothing on the market that can touch the Pirahna HIQ series in quality, build, design (Not a copy but an original design), and most of all performance. Why buy a contraption when you can have the best for less than the price of other poorly copied Don J knock-offs! Thanks Charlie i am glad the US Army use these antennas in battle as nothing else would stand up when needed! The value for money in the Pirahna series defies belief. Telephone support from Charlie was world class when ordering and it was 5 days from California to Canberra! I am simply Gob Smacked Charlie!

Fantastic  Time owned: more than 12 months
This is my third antenna from Charlie! Look at the reviews. Did you notice everyone refers to HI-Q as "Charlie"? That is because Charlie is the president, csr rep, chief engineer and phone answering guy! If you call HI-Q, Charlie answers the phone and stays with you until your problem is solved.
I have two 5-160's and just added a 6-RS Piranha to the collection. It costs twice as much as the competition, however if you pay half price for a pair of pants that don't fit, did you really get a good deal. It's not fair to compare the 6 series to any screwdriver on the market. It is like comparing a Bugatti Veron to a Yugo. I use it as a base antenna in my HOA restricted home. It handles full legal limit without breaking a sweat. Can you run that much power through a "cheap screwdriver"? Performance is phenomenal. Take a minute to look at the reviews and give Charlie a call. You will be impressed.

Hi-Q's Advanced Design = Real Benefits  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I've never written any kind of review, but I'm so strongly impressed by Hi-Q that I felt I should make an exception.

I mounted an Hi-Q 5/80 with a Hi-Q antenna controller on my truck and hooked up a Palstar analyzer: SWR = 1.0 R =48 +j 0 !! I connected the antenna to the radio and talked to the England on 3788 mhz! It was that simple. No shunts or finicky tuning, it just works.

More importantly, the service from Hi-Q's owner has been simply outstanding. When I first received my antenna, I did something really, really, stupid. I took it apart and killed it! Don't ask why. The owner of Hi-Q was not only very nice about the situation, he rebuilt my antenna in a single day (subtracting the shipping time). Throughout my lapse of sanity, I felt I was in very good hands.

Long before ordering the Hi-Q, I researched and carefully considered top-of-the-line antennas. I suspect Eham readers can easily guess which brands I looked at. Other antennas demonstrated similar on-air performance but IMHO: Hi-Q's more advanced design provides benefits that I find really useful and in one instance critical:

1: Lightweight and compact! The Hi-Q only weighs 8.7 lbs and the “footprint” on the bed-rail is no larger than my Tarheel Jr. – so, there's no problem using my truck's bed-cover!! This is critical for our family, since we use the covered truck bed as a big trunk for tools and gear.

A large screwdriver installed in the bed would have stolen space and made it impossible to use the cover. Mounting on the bumper or hitch would have degraded performance. I didn't like those compromises.

I mounted the Hi-Q in the rear stakeholder pocket (driver's side) using a Breedlove mount -- exactly where my Tarheel Jr. used to live. This places the Hi-Q nice and high; with the coil above the cab. Since the lower section of the Hi-Q is 1 1/2” diameter, this antenna was, effectively, a swap-out with my Tarheel Jr. It's no taller than the Tarheel and the larger coil is up in the air where it's no hindrance at all.

2. Constant height! My overall antenna height with a 4 ft. whip is about 10'. This is a real blessing since there are many railroad underpasses in my area. Also the Hi-Q doesn't change height like a screwdriver antenna, so I don't have to worry about hitting an underpass because I made a band change!

3. Weatherproof! I like that the Hi-Q antenna is sealed against the weather. Condensation would appear in my previous screwdriver antennas and while that didn't seem to do any harm; it did show that whatever's in the atmosphere can also get inside the antenna. Under certain conditions that might not be a good thing.

4. Fast Band Changes! The motor in this Hi-Q antenna is fast, fast, FAST! I didn't know how slow, slow really was until I got this antenna. Comparing the Hi-Q to my Tarheel is like comparing a Porsche to Peugot diesel (and I like Peugot diesels)!

5. A bargain! At current prices you can purchase the best mobile antenna made for about the same price as a mid-range screwdriver! While cost was not a key for me, I find this incredible.

6. RUGGED! Before retiring I owned a machine shop and appreciate fine craftsmanship. This Hi-Q antenna is beautifully made. The machining is superb and every component appears to be mil-spec. One Eham reviewer took issue with the “cheap, thin motor wires.” This is ridiculous. That wire looks and feels like the gorgeous, many, many, stranded stuff they use down the road at Sikorsky helicopter. That wire is strong and it's not cheap!

7. Works! Everything works. Everything fits. Everything is well thought out. Antenna, antenna controller and quick disconnect mount are equally well crafted and mil-spec tough. It's very clear that Hi-Q makes no compromises.

8. Design Savvy! I feel that Hi-Q's products demonstrate a lot of design savvy. They are elegant in their simplicity and highly effective. The antenna controller is a turns counter without preset memories and it works beautifully. I also own a very popular antenna controller with lots of buttons and the nicest word I can use to describe it is – inconsistent! Conversely, everything I've purchased from Hi-Q appears designed and built for a NASA flight – not a consumer electronics show.

9. On-air performance? Startling, amazing, like night and day – and any other superlatives I can think of! I enjoyed my other mobile antennas. Each represented the right antenna for that stage of my progress. But compared to the Hi-Q? There really is no comparison. The Hi-Q is in another league.

Other antennas may perform as well, but even if they do, the numerous design advantages of the Hi-Q antenna made this an easy decision for me. Like Porsches, pick-up trucks and lunar modules, Hi-Q gear is purpose built and just plain works. If you like that kind of design you'll be very pleased with Hi-Q.

Charlie & His Antennas Are The BEST!  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I had recently purchased a Military version of the Piranha, to include the EB-8 capacitance hat. The quality and craftsmanship are exceptional and, in my opinion, the BEST available for the amateur radio market. Charlie's customer service is beyond belief as he has gone "out of his way" to guide me on the proper care and installation of this wonderful antenna. I currently drive a 2008 Nissan Altima hy-brid vehical and wanted to mount this 11 lb antenna on the rear trunk. As most of you are aware, vehicles built today are mostly produced utilizing very thin metal and plastic in order to gain a few extra miles per gallon of gasoline. For the most part, these vehicles are not "HF antenna friendly" except for very light weight antennas, such as the Little Tarheel. To come to the point, Charlie resolved this dilemma by converting the base of the antenna to a larger diameter adapter (from 1/2" X 20 to screw on heady duty mount) in order to fit into the military mount (fold-over and quick-disconnect) used on Humvee type vehicles. He completed this task at no charge and assured me that I would have no issue with the antenna support that included a reinforced metal plate underneath the trunk itself. Not only does Charlie manufacture the best HF mobile antennas available for both the military and ham radio community, but his customer service is to be highly commended! Thank you Charlie for all that you do...
