A well-built AM/FM/SW analogue radio  Time owned: more than 12 months
I've owned my Tecsun R-9700DX for almost 2 years now and have been thoroughly satisfied with it. I wanted a no-frills yet performing portable analogue SW radio and this one fits the bill. The best part about it is the extremely long battery life; a single set of alkalines will give me 1 hour of use every day for about 3 months maybe more (approx 100 hours). Next is the dual conversion analogue tuner & dial as it is most fun to search for new stations from far away and I seem to get more fun out of that than with a digital display/tuner. Reception is excellent with the telescopic antenna and even better with the provided long-wire antenna. The DX/Local switch & the tone switch also work very well and audio quality is very pleasing to the ear. The AGC circuit works very well when fading is slow. Also 80 & 40 meter AM'ers sound real good with the long-wire (subject to propagation of course). For MW and FM performance is average and sounds real good with hi-fi headphones, ear-buds are ok. FM Stereo does work with headphones. The back-light is adequate for night-time operation.

Now for the bad parts:
1. There is some breakthrough or "bleeding" of some (not all) very strong signals from one band onto another, but can be remedied by connecting or disconnecting the external antenna and playing with the DX/Local switch.
2. The battery charging circuit has no documentation that i have found, it has no on/off switch and I presume it would attempt to charge alkaline dry cells when used with the wall wart which can be dangerous. I also presume (due to lack of documentation) that if nicads or nimh cells are used, there is no timer nor charge controller so it is essentially a dumb charger that CAN overcharge (use caution).
3. It will NOT tune to WWCR 12.160 MHz without changing the alignment which consequently will mess up the alignment for every other band too.

Else it is a very fine radio, easy to use and very sensitive and selective in its price range. Would recommend to anyone wanting a quality portable analogue SW radio, who might find digital radios too complicated or want super long battery life. Would give it a 4.5 on 5. English version sold by Kaito USA, exclusively.

Nice radio  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I've just received my 9700DX from a very trustworthy outlet in China, Anna is great to deal with. This radio is about the same size as the later Tecsun PL 600, 660 and now 880 and first came onto the market some time after 2002 however it is still readily available from online outlets. It is well made and despite the user manual only being available in Chinese, very intuitive to use. The only trick is the on/off switch is on the lower LHS of the radio and isn't the obvious switch on the upper left front of the set, that's the dial light! Performance wise, FM is what you'd expect from a portable of this type, reasonably sensitive, SW, the radio is very sensitive and reasonably selective for an analogue receiver, quite a joy to tune around but unfortunately doesn't cover the entire SW spectrum. Disappointingly, the 120 and 90 meter segments are missing as is the 11 meter band. Other than that, the radio performs very well. MW is somewhat disappointing, this is where the radio is let down. Ok, it tunes the more powerful MW outlets but lacks the sensitivity required to do any DX'ing. Perhaps it might just be my sample as other reports I've read, the 9700DX doesn't appear to show poor sensitivity on the MW band. I'm impressed by the dial light which you can switch on permanently however illumination is somewhat uneven. There are LED's to show power on, tuning and FM stereo which only shows when the ear buds are used. The radio comes with ear buds, roll up aerial extension for SW, AC power adapter and manual. I would give this radio a 4 if it wasn't for the somewhat deaf MW band but as mentioned before, it may be just my radio. I'd still recommend the Tecsun R-9700DX to anyone looking for a simple but capable radio. Worth the money.
