A very good vintage scanner. Not like the newer generation of scanners, but for basics its hard to beat. The larger readout and top mounted speaker are a real asset. The plastic cabinet makes it a feather weight

well i have had this radio for about 4 years and when i bought it it was great but about 2 years ago it stoped reciving the vhf low and vhf high bands like it used to so that means no more air band ham band and barly any of my local fire and police however its still teciving the 800mhz trunked systems good just to let the other owners know just incase it does it to them other wise its a great radio

Great Scanner for the Money

Picked up one of these a few weeks ago, and have really enjoyed it. Definitely needs an external antenna instead of the stock one that comes with it. It is a little hard to program off of the panel, so get the cable for it. The software can be found for free on the net. Unit seems to have good adj. ch. rejection, and is a good looking unit to. Only thing I would add would be sq. tone capabliity. Have been considering a UB 780. This unit is comparable, except for no computer control or tone capablility. You can't go wrong for the price. Pick one up before they are all gone!!!

This is a fantastic scanner! Check out Radio Shack's website on it for complete technical information. Features that I particularly enjoy are the alpha tags (no more guessing what a freq is, or having to rifle through a frequency list to find it!) and the weather alert feature. The scanner will display text alerts sent by the NWS and sound a tone when one is received, for 5 minutes. If you set your local WX frequency as the priority channel, it will only go to it when there is a WX alert - great for those areas that frequently get them, like in "Tornado Alley". The Pro-2053 and 93 are the same, except the 2053 is a base version. As of this review, the 2053 is on sale for $179.99, although Radio Shack seems to alternate between the two scanners when it comes to sales.
Downsides - Do not even attempt to program this radio by the manual. It'll drive you buggy. Spend $15 at http://www.pro93.com and buy the cable to program it. Then go and download Win93 to use as the programming software. Don't bother with the ScanPro93 software available at pro93.com. This scanner feels a bit fragile, as is the case with all the Radio Shack scanners. It would not fair well in a drop from a few feet.
In review - This isn't your daddy's scanner. It's not a crystal scanner, where you could flip a switch and select or deselect a channel to scan. It requires patience and a lot of reading on the internet to comprehend, but you should expect that when dealing with a product with these features. Buy it. You'll love it. The only thing that would be better is a digital scanner, but they'll be available in October for roughly $600.

I picked my 2053 on sale at radio shack for $170.
It supports UHF/800/900 Motorola & EDACS trunking, weather alerts and text tagging. There is also a interface you can buy to allow your computer to operate or program the radio. The scanner also follows conventional frequencies while trunk tracking.
You can simply program in the control channel(s) for a trunked system and easily follow any nearby system. It also is very sensitive, I can follow a trunked system 50 miles from the house very well, but I do need to program in the entire system. It also features band searches and a search catergory you create. The only item that I would like to see is PL decoding, but other then that this is a fantastic scanner radio for the shack.
