Reviews Summary for Elecraft T1-FT817 Adapter (T1 ATU to Yaesu FT-817 transceiver)
Elecraft T1-FT817 Adapter (T1 ATU to Yaesu FT-817 transceiver) Reviews: 7 Average rating: 5.0/5 MSRP: $49
Description: This "smart" adapter cable allows the Elecraft T1 antenna tuner to track band
changes from a Yaesu FT-817 transceiver. Changing bands at the rig wakes
up the T1 and recalls the last-used L-C settings on this band, without the
need to transmit.

This method of re-tuning the ATU results in less QRM on the bands, and is
much more convenient than having to transmit on each band change, as is
required with other tuners.

The adapter is available only pre-assembled, not as a kit.

The T1-FT817 adapter cable incorporates a small microcontroller (MCU)
inside the mini-DIN connector at the transceiver end. This MCU monitors the
band-data voltage at the rig's ACC/CAT jack, and converts the data to digital
form for the antenna tuner. The MCU draws an extremely small amount of
current from the FT-817's battery or power supply: just 330 microamps when
the rig is turned on, and 70 microamps when it's turned off.

The adapter cable is 18" long and well-shielded to protect against RFI.

Product is in production.

It works, its small.  Time owned: more than 12 months
Not much to add from the title, does a great job. Nice size for qrp/portable. Price is fair considering its high quality.

Works Well  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
My original review on this cable stated that it did not fit new production (as of April 2016) FT-817ND radios and was unusable. This has since been resolved.

Elecraft contacted me and explained that based on my experience they had re-worked their cable so it would fit the new production radios and asked if I would evaluate it. I agreed.

The new cable now fits into the FT-817ND radio. I ran several tests with it contected to the matching antenna tuner and it worked flawlessly. Makes using the T1 antenna tuner a real pleasure with the FT-817ND. The cable and embedded electronics retain band settings in memory and follow band changes from the radio flawlessly. I am revising my rating to 5 as this cable now fits and performs according to specification.

I must commend Elecraft for making this kind of an effort to resolve a problem. There are not many companies that would be as pro-active.

Just got my t1 and ft817 lead today and I have run around the house tuning stuff like the table, chairs, the 6m rubber duck that came with the ft817 (tunes perfect on 20m) and I cant fault it!
It gets a better match than my mfj and lake tuners and the link cable means it only does it once with my loft 20m dipole that is my main antenna- it tunes it to all bands down to 80 with perfect swr.
I can recommend this setup to everyone.
As for the comments about the case and build quality, that I thankfully ignored, I think that it is fine; not a metal box you can drive a tractor over, but its small enough to fit your shirt pocket safe out of the way of tractors!

It works.  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I cut the mini-plug off of the end that plugs into the T1 and built the T1 into the FT-817 with the T1-FT817 providing band change information to the T1.

The thing works as advertised. What more can you ask for?

Real Nice  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I have used the T1 with the little FT-817 control cable for a week now. It really makes tuning a snap if you band hop like I do.

If you have an Yaesu FT-817 you will want the Remote Control Adaptor cable! Changing bands will hold setting in memory so when switching back T1 will return to the previous settings. Real nice!

I wrote a longer review of Elecraft's T1 autotuner elsewhere here, but want to add that the accessory cable to interface with the FT-817 works well. Once you've autotuned on all bands you intend to use with a particular antenna, using the T1 and the 817, each time you change bands, the tuner automatically reconfigures itself from its memory with no further effort. That's sweet. The cable plugs into the side of the T1 and connects to the FT-817's accessory port. Devices like this can definitely spoil a ham ....
