This Antarctic island is the star of the latest video by James Brooks, 9V1YC. This is the twelfth DVD DXpedition offering by James and his camera work just keeps getting better. South Orkney is one of the rarest DXCC entities in the world. We begin the journey at Ushuaia with the team loading a container full of gear onto the Braveheart for the journey to the south. As usual the owner of the ship, old salt Nigel Jolly has plenty to say about ham radio operators and what they get up to. It is not long after departure we are greeted by the cold windswept hostile environment of the island. Typical sub Antarctic tundra with sparse vegetation with no trees for antenna anchors, extremely rocky terrain and howling winds makes life difficult to drive in a steel peg let alone try to exist there for a few weeks. The team of 13 sets about erecting masts, running cables and activating VP8ORK. Custom built accommodation for living and operating allow them to quickly get on the air with massive world wide pileups. James is a master at grabbing candid sound bite interviews of individual members as they tell the story of why DXpeditioning is such a buzz. One team member simply enjoys giving out contacts simply to put a grin on the face of another unknown ham on the other side of the world. 63,643 contacts made a lot of hams smile worldwide. South Orkney Island is 600 kilometers north of the Antarctic lying approximately 60 degrees south and 45 degrees west. The spectacular scenery is overwhelmingly beautiful. James is brilliant at capturing the rugged beauty of the snow covered mountains cascading down into gray rocky valleys leading to the operating site on shores of Signy Island. Icebergs the size of football fields drifting offshore are commonplace This is a video that may be watched by the family as ham radio, microphones and the keying cacophony of pileups only form a small part of what you see. VP8ORK is a visual stunner with great editing and fast paced narrative along with insightful interviews. I rate VP8ORK South Orkney 2011 Five stars. It is a must for your video collection.
