Still a capable rig |
Time Owned: 3 to 6 months. |
Strange how certain rigs “click” with me, and others don’t. I had a MK V Field, and it never really grew on me. This one is. It is an outstanding rig, and with my Airspy HF+ Discovery “hitching a ride” on the RX antenna in/out connectors, it’s just a ball. Old meets new, and they play along so nicely together! Solid quality, and top features, even without the SDR. Changed my mind about Yaesu…. The new menu-centric smaller ones I just can’t endure. This gives me best of both worlds. |

Excellent |

Considering it's 25 years old it's like new. There are no options installed but I have found it to be a delight to use. TX reports are great and the RX is equally good. The DSP (OK only AF) is very effective. Pretty much everything you could want is on the front panel even down to switching the 2nd and 3rd IF filters individually (if they are fitted). The built-in speaker has a nice sound. Finally, the built-in ATU actually tracks your current VFO frequency and tries to predict the settings should you transmit and does it very well!! Never seen that before. |

Smoooth! |
Time Owned: 6 to 12 months. |
Finally! I now get to keep a radio of which I sold many of working for a HF outlet in Sydney. This rig paired with an FL7000 you're feeling important!
Seriously, Yaesu just stepped up to follow on from the famous 1000D. Each of the filtering options are clean and precise they get you where you want to go quickly.
Using the EDSP it is on permanently in my ops room it just makes sound operating sense to me.
I'm big on audio quality and still go to great pains to achieve it. The 1000MPs outlay you can reach anything, this is a radio you want directly in reach to all controls. menus are simple and you can fly this rig how you want. Onboard tuner is adapts very well although I have no need to use it. Attenuation...what a dream it is what it 0-18db with good effect!
IPO adds again to a super smooth operating experience.
IF shift and Notch filters are excellent.
Some have had issues with the display over time this one is bright and sheer with yellow display outlining your radio experience.
Summing it up...if you can come away from your operations feeling good about the way you ran your gear, the reliability of the experience being repeated every time you throw the switch that's a great radio!
I said smoooth and I mean this most sincerely.
Pour yourself your favorite beverage, sit down and indulge the operating experience. Whatever you do, don't sell it! |

finally decided to write a review of this great radio, having owned it for some 15 years now. when purchased, it was in its basic form, and it did perform very well. after about 6 months, i decided to fill up the filter slots with inrad filters, and also the roofing filter. well, as expected, the narrow filters do a grand job, when the going gets tough, but the best addition by far was the roofing filter. the best test for this item, is during say, a 40m contest in the evening. you can really separate the close in stations, and operate! very quiet receiver, especially selecting 2.0khz filters, and audio on tx can be set and pitched exactly where you want it to be. well designed front panel, with a nicely weighted vfo knob, and all controls have a quality look and feel about them, that i really dont see in other equipment of the same value.
i own several yaesu radio's, and have owned icom and kenwood radio's, and honestly prefer the looks and quality of this radio. performance wise, its up there with the best of them, especially with the narrow roofing filter installed. it wont be leaving the shack anytime soon, and has a permanent place there beside another yaesu classic, my ft 102.
this is an updated review, the radio still performs like a champ, and recent service, with display changed to led lighting keeps this classic radio bouncing along.
im still amazed by the quiet, yet sensitive receiver.
the addition of inrad roofing filter, and then all filter slots filled up, plus narrow cw in sub rx only serves to enhance the if shift, width and noise reduction controls.
a lot of radios have come and gone from this shack, but this radio is a keeper !!

Still a fine radio |

I love this radio.
Although I have a more modern rig, an IC7300, I find that this now nearly 25 year old Yaesu more than holds its own.
My IF filter board is fully populated, and I have installed an inRad 500Hz filter for the sub-receiver.
The receiver is excellent with full, rich, warm sound. With the cascaded IF filters, adjustable IF shift and width along with even this early implementation of DSP, it deals with close-in interference quite well.
The audio produced on transmit is excellent (I use a Yaesu MD-100A8X mic), and the flexibility for the personal setup of various functions is extraordinary.
I have mine paired with a Yaesu Fl-2100B amp.
Both have operated for decades without issues of any kind.

a man's radio |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
I purchased this model 3 years ago to use as a secondary transceiver in my shack with experimental antennas home made. recently the internal power supply gave up and i had it repaired. I only have good thinks to say about this rig. its my favourite on 80/40 meters. i hooked a md200 to it who made everything better, i only have good audio reports from all my contacts. I do recommend this radio , no question about that. 5* |

Best Tranceiver I have ever owned. |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
I have owned my Yaesu FT-1000MP since 2002. Bought it at a SK auction and have never regretted the $1200.00 I paid for it then. It literally has thousands of hours on it since I obtained it and I have run RTTY, CW, PSK and many other digital modes through it. It has never failed, even once. It has never been back to Yaesu or to any other repair facility. The filtering is great and I have every filter you can stick in it. For a late 90's transceiver, it is fantastic. I have a Icom IC-756 PRO that is awesome but still not near the radio that the Yaesu is. Since I am not a fan of digital radio equipment, this radio suits me just fine. I have been a ham since I got my novice ticket in 1958 when I was a junior in high school. That said, it means that I have owned a lot of equipment over the years and I would rate my Yaesu at the top of my transceiver list. |

not recommend |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
had this machine for 3 weeks, trade it in for FT-2000.
problems: Antennetuner seems to "hang" on 20meters. SWR =>5+ the seller told me it was a common error with FT-1000.
Maybe the machine is too sophisticated for me but:
Poor layout from knobs and menu, cost me hours to figure it out.
Could't get used to the (poor) sound it produces.
The DSP works only on one setting.
it must be weighing 50KG or more :-)
Owned it for 3 weeks, no single contact made with it. so save youre money and go for the must better FT-2000.
