Great radio and so many options, computer control is fun. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Just purchased the 1000mp used and it been nothing but great fun. Learning how to make this baby sing. The receiver is everything you read about and maybe more, the edsp is something special. Just a very good radio and Im just learning. Only drawback Ive noticed so far is the
noise blanker is not as effective as the one in the FT-102 this replaced, however the edsp will do the same thing plus more. And all the other features are just fantastic.
This is the Cadillac of Radios no doubt.

Time Owned: more than 12 months.
What more can I say? This is not hearsay. I have compared it to my IC-775DSP, my Kenwood and other radios I've had in the shack. Sent 'em all back. The MP's a keeper.

Still one of the best Time Owned: more than 12 months.
The FT1000MP is still one of the best even though it has been around a few years. I have owned mine for over three years now. I was considering a 756PRO, but was dissapointed in its dynamic range performance. Dynamic range DOES matter in crowded band conditions. I like having a built in power supply also. The dual s meters with the second reciever on is a nice. The front panel layout is one of the best out there. The receiver is fabulous with a winning combination of great selectivity, dynamic range, quietness, and received audio. I have yet to hear a better sounding radio on transmit if set up properly even using MD-100. I have worked a lot of good dx on ten meter phone with incredibly crowded band conditions, but by using 2.0 filter, dsp bandpass, shift, and width all together I have no problem pulling out weak stations with 20+ signals 1khz away on both sides. I don't find dsp noise reduction very helpful on phone, but then again I have yet to find ANY radio that I like in that respect. Pulling up the menu selection is kind of a hassle - minor complaint for such a great radio. I see newer radios have a MENU button which makes sense to me. At current prices the FT1000MP is a STEAL. Nothing out there makes me consider wanting to sell mine yet.

Question on early/late Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I have a guestion about the Yaesu FT-1000MP's. Is there any significant difference in either software or hardware between the early production, say 1995/1996 versus the mid or late production 1998-2000 ones. It would appear from the reviews, that there's a bad batch of Y2K units out there. I had a 1998 version, which I liked but decided to dump it when I saw the Mark V at Dayton before the price fell. It would seem that the only real world difference is the more logical DSP controls on the Mark V. I thought the MP DSP worked fine, but those controls are very confusing to me. Plus, I'll never notice the difference with the Mark V's class "A" final, so for half it's price, I'm getting back with another "MP". Just curious about the MP's production differences though.

Unlocked and fairly satisfied Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
After soundly thrashing the 'MP in my initial post, I wanted to update and moderate. Firstoff, I traced the intermittent lock-up problem to the mic connector. Whereas I could not easily get at it to inspect, clear or whatever, the jostling required to remove and reinstall the bottom pan shook free the stray solder piece, wire strand or whatever that was fouling things up. All better now!

I find the MP very enjoyable to operate. The many menu options make it flexible but not overly intimidating. Tx audio customization is effective and a worthwhile exercise. The dual receive is outstanding, particularly when working European SSB (contest of 9/9/00). Relay and ALC connections are via RCA jacks as opposed to 7 - 25 pin connectors (YES!). Controls have a great feel.

All this aside, I find my Kenwood TS870 easier and more enjoyable to use. The 870's receiver seems quieter, more sensitive and DSP generated skirts seem steeper in side-by-side tests. The 870's NR is more effective and easier to customize for particular situations. Single analog NB works better, too. Finally, the HC5 in my Heil ProSet drives the rig harder and gets better reports than the Yaesu MD100 nic.

Overall, I find the MP to be a great deal at its current $2349 price. Yet, don't overlook the TS870.

Had to return first rig Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I purchased an FT-1000MP on 6-12-00 from HRO Deleware. After a couple of days of use,I received reports of varying audio and frequency inaccuracy. The rigs serial# was 0E560044. After zero beating with WWV,frequency instability was verified.Drifting varied as much as 600hz!!!!!
HRO said bring it down, they have to verify fault and it must be done before ten days from purchase. HRO said the radio was fine. I tuned in the same station with their ft1000MP and my ft1000MP and showed the difference. They said that all rigs are a little different.I agreed that all rigs are a little off FREQUENCY however 600hz is unacceptable. In the end,i feel that they actually took the rig back because they felt it was fine and resellable not because it had problems. Anyway after 4 hrs!!!! Bob Penny the manager was kind enough to give me a brand new rig. The New rig is fantastic in every way. I feel that returning a radio to ANY DEALER should be as easy as returning all other consumer electronics. After all ham gear is simply consumer electronics now. Ham gear is nothing special anymore and it is no more difficult to manufacture , market and sell than tv's stereos or any other electronic goods in this country.73sss I love my second MP

quality radio Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I too received a defective radio from AES and had to return it. I received a new radio and it works
as it should and I find it to be a quality radio in all repects. AES instructed me to return the defective radio and make sure I insured it. That cost me $50. I attempted to get AES to pick up the charges as it was certainly not my fault they sent me a defective radio. They refused and I sent a letter to the main office pleading my case. I received a $25 gift certificate. Apparently AES feels that customers should buy at their own risk.

Fabulous Radio, Best seen yet. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
A note to Terry, who posted the review 2 down, I had ordered an MP from AES, and it had the IDENTICAL problem. Radio worked well, then after 30 mins the receiver slowly faded to nothingness. Turn it off for a while (15-30 mins), start her up again, same problem. SO, I called AES (after 7 days of ownership), and was told "We will fix it for you, not send you a new one." Unsatisfied, I got the manager on the line. I was told "Of course we'll ship you a new one, no, we won't fix yours and send it back, I promise." Okay, so I send them the radio... one week, two weeks, HEY, where's my new MP? I call AES. "Oh, we put your radio on the bench, opened the top, and could not recreate the problem. We just sent your old one back to you." What, no new one, let me speak to the manager. "Who, me, I NEVER said I would send you another one, you'll HAVE to accept your old one back." A pure lie, an out and out lie. No I won't accept it... Hello, VISA, cancel the charge. Hello, UPS, no, I will not accept this package. AES' exact explanation was this: If you buy a car, and something doesn't work, you don't get a new car from the dealer... and if your MP is broken, you won't get a new MP." My response: this is consumer electronics people, not automobiles. If I buy a new stereo system, and its broken, I'm getting a new system. Bottom line was that the problem was probably heat related. After something in there warmed up enough, it called it quits. I guess testing the radio with the top off would not recreate that situation. Anyways, I was not about to let AES' poor customer service ruin my desire to get an MP

SO, I call HRO New Hampshire... New MP arrives within 2 days. Perfect shape, Perfect working order, and by far the best radio I have ever owned in my 16 years of hamming. I could dump a lot of praise for it here, but suffice it to say that it is, in my opinion, the best radio available. Now, factor in the current price, and it is a no brainer. Buy an MP and you will be satisfied, across the board good radio. (with the best xmit audio you are going to get)

Bad MP's Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have a friend who recently purchased an MP from HRO. He too had problems with it shutting down. HRO told him there was a bad batch of MP's. He sent it to Yaesu under warranty and they quickly turned it around. When he pressed them about shipping cost, they told him to send them the bill and they reimbursed him. k1xt

My MP has been a great rig. Right now it's the best bang for the buck at under $2500.

Super radio, but HRO, Yaesu?? Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
In March of this year, HRO was selling this radio for $300 less than any other dealer. I usually deal with AES and someone there told me that HRO got a price break from Yeasu on a run of MP's known to have problems. I found this difficult to believe since I've dealt with HRO for many years and they've always been above board. When my MP arrived, I fired it up right away and all seemed OK, but then the press of business kept me off the air for the next two weeks. Upon returning to the air I discovered the audio on the MP slowly faded to dead silence after the radio was in use for 30 minutes to an hour. Turning off the radio for an hour would allow another 30-60 minutes of operating time before the audio faded again. A call to HRO resulted in being told that after ten days it was my tough luck and to deal with Yaesu. I will never again use HRO and customer service in the same sentence. Upon contacting Yaesu HQ, I was told to send the MP for repair and they would turn it around ASAP and would pay the freight one way. That would have taken the MP out of service for a month or longer. No way. After several conversations with Yaesu service staff I was told there were two runs of bad MP's and mine was perhaps one with a bad 10 megacycle crystal. Yaesu overnighted the crystal and I did the repair myself. A week or so later the display twice failed to illuminate when the radio was turned on, but hasn't happened since.

When up and running the radio is great! My TS950 is a distant second when it comes to filtering. The MP is pure magic when digging out a signal from layers of QRM and QRN.

To date, I primarily use the plastic quick-start card when using the radio. Someday I will take a week off from work and attempt to understand the manual.

I may upgrade to the Mark V, but will carefully monitor E-Ham reviews prior to doing so. I will be very wary of Yaesu products in the future. In the meanwhile, I sincerely hope HRO and Yaesu review some of their policies and practices.
