Review Summary For : Avantone Pro Passive MixCube
Reviews: 2MSRP: 130.00
Description:
Although designed as a professional recording and mixing monitor, the MixCube may be used as a communications speaker. The efficiency is excellent at 93dB@1W/1M. The frequency response is specified at 90Hz to 17kHz, but the design maximizes the mid-range frequencies for voice. It uses a very high quality, specially designed 5.25" driver and is enclosed in a sealed acoustically dampened and shielded MDF enclosure 6.5" on a side with radiused corners. It's available in Piano Black or Cream color.

Simply the best. Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Audio is my life. Now that's out of the way, the Avantone passive mix cube is a truly stellar performer for communications. I am a public safety communications guy and I run my own recording studio (a real one, not just a microphone and a computer). I've heard a lot of speakers and audio monitors in my day. The Pro Passive MixCube makes listening to a wide range of human voices through communications technologies actually pleasurable. I currently use my MixCube with an Icom 7410. It has really helped to make my transceiver's performance shine. Always a rewarding listening experience.

Superb Communications Speaker Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
After significant research, I determined this speaker may be an excellent choice for communications use. It's manufactured by Avantone Pro, a very well known company that produces mics and monitors for the recording industry. This speaker is available either in a Powered Active Model, or the Passive Model, which is reviewed here. This MixCube monitor is designed for the professional mixing engineer to ensure the recording will sound good on lesser audio systems, such as "bass challenged" table radios, televisions, car stereos, iPod docking stations, etc. Although its frequency response is listed at 90Hz to 17kHz, it appears flat from 200Hz to 5kHz which is perfect for communications use. And, its a very efficient speaker, especially one with a sealed-box design at 93dB@1watt/1 meter which is perfect for the modern transceiver using an integrated circuit audio output chip. Impedance is 8 ohms. It's housed in a beautiful piano black finish with a 5.25" driver with a massive 43 ounce magnet. Overall dimensions are 6.5" x 6.5" x 6.5" and weighs 6 lb. 11 oz. This speaker really emphasizes the vocal mid-range frequencies, and eliminates the hiss normally found on hi-fi speakers used with ham rigs. CW sounds very good through the Passive MixCube. The only downside is the driver doesn't have a protective grille, but this is only a minor carp. This very high-quality speaker is now my main speaker for use at my station.
