Quality radio Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Radio Labs did a fine job on the modification. Decided to have the tuning wheel detent option and I'm glad I did. Sensitivity is very exceptional and rivals my Grundig Satellit 750, Yaesu 450D, and Yaesu ft 817.. Radio is full of features and pleasure to listen to, especially on SSB. Once you get the hang of programming, it is easy. Manual could be better written, but is ok. Overall very happy with the quality, sensitivity, many features, and overall performance. I believe this is the best portable SWR on the market. Almost forgot, the display is very good.

FIRST ABOUT THE RADIO ITSELF-FIRST IMPRESSION REVIEW

The Radio is built solid. I happen to like the tuning wheel because I only use it for single side band (ECSS tuning) and since the numbers of the Frequency are only shown in 1 HZ, the feel gives me a good sense along with the Zero Beat Sound.

My unit like many others with firmware 1.18 has a tendancy toward having to push buttons twice about 15% of the time and that the 1.23 version fixes that problem.

ATS tuning is ok. The problem on FM is that it only memorizes what it can hear and as we all know, the Antenna has to be adjusted (Telescoping whip) on FM stations. You are better off using the up/down tuning step for FM.

This is not a radio for newbies unless you consider yourself tech savvy. I admit the direct tuning method takes some getting used to but the Pages are so much better on this radio than previous radios I have owned. Again, although I love the memory system, like Traditional Scanners, you need to read the manual, understand Shortwave (When and how to listen), ECSS tuning, and understand this Paging system. With practice, you will be able to edit, add, and cancel Frequencies by country. But again, read the manual and utilize the Yahoo user groups on the Sangean 909x or the Super Sangean 909x.

I can not say enough about the sound, FM, RDS, and all of the other features. They are superb.

THE RADIO LAB MODIFICATION-FIRST IMPRESSION REVIEW
In a word, outstanding. I owned the original and returned it because I questioned the clarity. The Modifications by Radio Labs completely change the sound and make distant stations come to life. It is a keeper. Especially utilizing ECSS tuning.
And AM dxing is outstanding.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Is this the Eton E1? No. But for all the portables out there, this is the Mercedez of portables. (I use mine as a Table Top because It is awesome by the bedside!!) Yeah, it doesn't have sync, but you do not need sync with the clarity that Radio Labs has done and ecss tuning. This isn't a toy and for $289, it is far superior to anything out there today in the Portable Market. By the way, it DOES have dsp on all bands. It is used differently which is why you do not have the features of an Icom r75. Nor the price and for the money, MUCH better sound for Shortwave Listening!!!! A++++

ONE BEEF

Why is it that shortwave radios come out and then change the firmware to upgrade the unit after having purchased an older unit. Police scanners are so much more useful, because firmware and frequencies can be updated directly to the scanner you have. Shortwave Radios (Not the computer Box SW's) ought to allow you to do the same thing. Then the whole quality control issues of so many radios and the keeping track of serial numbers, would be thankfully obsolete.
