Pleasant surprise Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I use an antenna portable that when I hook it up receive is less than my mobile. Since I am slightly a type A personality, I expect it to receive as well as anything else. Since I can not figure out why, and no one else I asked for help can figure out why, I decided on using a band-aid, and that is the MFJ 1040C. It helps me with the weaker reception. As the other reviewer said it is really sharp to tune, but it does work well. It is very small, and great for portable use. I have a patch cable hookup to bypass the the preamp on transmit and it has worked well. I did not blow up the preamp. It can also be used to control the noise the better by how you adjust all of the dials. The only thing I wish it had was preamplification of the BCB as I like to tune the stations for news updates.

Works as advertised Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The tune control is way too sensitive.
A few degrees of rotation away from peak gain location (if you can find it) looses 4-6db of gain.
Really needs a vernier or secondary fine tune control.

Manual only specifies 12V with no range. Most rigs use 13.6-14.3 V. Haven't tried it at these voltages. No internal voltage regulator.

Nice for pulling out the weak ones... Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Would have given it a 5, but 1st one was faulty.
That said MFJ took care of it w/o a hitch, even paid shipping both ways!!!
Does what it says, receive & transmit with no special hookups, just key your mic & talk....

Picture in link is NOT the 1040C ..picture is reviews is correct!!!!
