HF Balcony antenna Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
We live in a nice building that doesn’t allow an antenna on the balcony. Thankfully the railing is over 50ft long surrounding the deck of our corner unit. Its a decent amount of 1¾” tubing that is welded together ad bolted to metal flashing.

After some research I came across the TRX-80 All band HF antenna coil on eBay. I ordered a Hustler 102″ antenna whip IC56 stainless steel antenna whip and a heavy duty mobile mount with the common 24 ⅜ thread mount. It took a while for all the parts to arrive but its well worth the wait!

I Created a bracket out off steel and attached it with saddle clamps to the railing, removed some paint in order to ground the antenna to the railing but this turned out to be unreliable. So I ran a sepperate wire to ground.

Up to 10 mhz the tuning is really sharp. Using a antenna analyzer makes this task easy. From 10 - 25 mhz this antenna is easy to tune. Since the 102" whip is already a quarter wave for 10 meters there is no coil needed.

In order to improve the matching on the lower bands I ad a 12 turn HF choke from the antenna to ground. Raising the Z and improving the SWR a bit.

The TRX-80 is very well build, The coil is made out of copper wire and all connections are soldered. All hardware used is heavy duty.
