Review Summary For : Clansman - Ex UK Military lightweight modular boom headset
Reviews: 2MSRP: $10 typical cost
Description:
These headsets have a modular construction and are designed to be field serviceable. They also incorporate high quality microphone and headphone inserts. Which are specially tailored for the purpose of speech communication under difficult operating conditions. So they are ideal for Amateur radio DX chasing. An additional advantage is that, if required, the right hand headset module can be unclipped and popped out.

Mil. Spec. Quality Headset Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This is not a cheque book amateur's project- you'll have to do a bit of reading, thinking and get your hands dirty. I bought this headset from eBay for a song. I was motivated by Martin, G8JNJ's ideas and used information gleaned from his associated web page and other sources across the internet to modify it for use with my ICOM IC-7200. I fed the audio through from pin 8 and used a DC blocking capacitor on the mic. line. I gave up trying to get the Pressel to work and just installed a new coiled lead with an eight pin Foster plug from eBay. I removed the auxiliary audio out socket and replaced it with a momentary action switch to enable PTT, again sourced from eBay. It was a perfect fit in the aperture left by the auxiliary plug. I had to wind up the mic. gain to 80 (the Japanese stock mic. is happy at 30!) but going from electret to dynamic that's no surprise, and it is working just fine. The received audio is very good but I need to reduce the volume when on these cans. I monitored transmissions into a Bird dummy load using an FT818 with Sony headphones. I have read that the transmitted audio is a little "strident" and that seems a very apt way to describe it, but it's probably better suited for comms than unnecessary low frequencies. I can heartily recommend this headset- it really is of high quality and available for a song as surplus. In my case I spent more on the replacement lead, switch and capacitor than I did for the headset. I have no other headsets to compare it with but I'm happy with the outcome- at least on my ICOM. I reckon it will still be going strong when the plastic bits on the CM500s and their ilk have long since given up the ghost. I don't think I'd ever need to buy it again.

Great cheap alternative to Heil hedsets Time Owned: more than 12 months.
These headsets are a great bargain (orginally costing several hundred dollars each), and good quality used ones are frequently available on ebay for about $5

The construction means that they can easily be modified for use with Amateur tranceivers.

The audio response is similar to that of the Heil HC-4 (DX) mic insert.

I've detailed the modifications I've made, which can be found at this web link.
