Excellent Antenna! No regrets - it exceeded my expectations! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The Diamond X50A is a very durable mid-sized, mid-gain antenna. The antenna is less than 6' tall, and each of the 3 heavy-duty radials only extend out about 8". The coax connection is actually made inside the base of the antenna, so you don't have to worry about weather corrosion. Inside the antenna, the radiating element consists of brass/copper wire (10ga?) and tubing (1/2"?). The coil at the base appears to be very heavy-duty, made with a thicker wire. The protective cover is made from a coated fiberglass. The antenna is 1/4 wave x 3 for 2M and 5/8 wave x 3 for 440 with gain ratings of 4.5dB on 2M and 7.2dB on 440.

As long as the antenna is mounted away from metal objects, you will be pleasantly surprised to see the SWR readings straight out of the box (it is "pre-tuned" / no tuning required) The SWR (in my installation) was optimized at the upper (repeater) segments of each band (1.15:1 VHF, FLAT UHF), and rose to no more than 1.4:1 at the bottom portion of each band. The antenna seems fairly broadbanded. Of course, your results may vary based on your installation. I won't get into "how far it talks", as that is largely dependant on band conditions on antenna location.

One final note - if you order your X50A through mail order, make sure you request they ship the antenna in a TUBE, not a box. HRO just threw mine in a box with paper, and although the antenna is durable, it arrived in 2 pieces.

I have my antenna attached to a 15 foot mast mounted to my balcony and it's been working great. I've also found out that Diamond has excellent customer support -- the representative who I spoke to was very knowledgeable and courteous. I have no complaints/problems with the antenna and my only regret is that I didn't purchase one sooner. If you have any ?s regarding the antenna, please feel free to e-mail me at: kc0eao@qsl.net.

Great dual-band antenna Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This is a very durable well made antenna. At about 5.6ft long it's great for places where you can not put up a very long antenna. It is a very good performer. I can hit repeaters in a 40+ mile radius with only 5 watts.
I would recommend this antenna to anybody looking for a good performing, well made, lower priced dual band antenna.
