Good old tube VFO or exciter. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
These units came in 3 types. PMO-1 is portable in a carrying case, PMO-2 is a 19" rack model and PMO-3 fits in a cabinet. Otherwise they are the same unit electrically. The basic unit covers 2 to 4 MHz with a doubler to cover 4 to 8. It has 2 ovens which cycle and keep the frequency constant after the warm up period. The output tube is a 6AQ5 running a few watts out. I have had mine for over 40 years and only replaced a ballast tube in that time. I used it with a TMC Navy receiver as an outboard VFO on 80m CW and it worked very well. I also used it as a VFO with a 125 watt amp on 80m CW. It has a key jack on the front panel for keying. Mine is the PMO-1 but PMO-2s are currently available (July 2012) at Fair Radio Sales for $125.00. For anyone who enjoys playing with old tube gear this is a great piece of surplus equipment. I recently dug mine out of the basement junque box and will soon have it driving a solid state amp for fun!
