The BEST! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I just purchased my HS-5 phones used here on eHam. These are the absolute BEST phones I have every owned. I have been a ham for 46 years and have used many headphones. Hands down these are the best sounding and most comfortable in those 46 years. I got them for great price used but am considering buying a pair new so that I have a spare if anything happens to the ones I have. They are THAT GOOD.

Typical KENWOOD quality. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
These KENWOOD HS5's are old time goodness.
The correct impedence and frequency response to really improve the intelligibility of HF communication audio.
Simply: comfortable and hears very well !
Unmatched, the best HF headphones for SWL and HAM in the amateur equipment market.

Still great after 35 years Time Owned: more than 12 months.
After 35 years of use I decided it was time to replace the foam inserts. The inserts had completely deteriorated to dust. I replaced them with the Heil Pro Micro Ear Pads. I used the Heil foam inserts and set aside the cotton covers. Hint: the HC-5 foam pads are removed by gently pressing on the cotton ear pad and rotating counterclockwise and then gently pulling the cotton/foam assembly away from the headphones. The headphones feel like new again.

Great with vintage gear Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I'm using my new HS-5 headphones with my vintage boatanchor gear. They sound good, wired correctly for mono, comfortable, and like mentioned earlier, have a solid appearance and cloth covered cable. I even use them on my 7300 since I have no dual receiver issues with that radio.

Fantastic audio Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Friend of mine in the hobby had these laying around around and gave them to a good home... mine...
Took them out of the box and was surprised by how they looked in person. These are some very well made headphones.
Plugging them into my Kenwood TS430 and tuning around the 20 meter band ,stations jumped out . I worked S51DX Slovenia right off the bat and didn't have any hard time at all hearing the audio .
I was able to give him a good RST because I had no problem picking him out of the noise .
The other thing I love about these headphones is I don't have to have the AF gain on the 430 turned up to 12 to hear anything. Anything past 8 o'clock on the knob and it's extremely loud.
I have Sennheisers for my mp3's now the HS 5 for my DX'ing.

Nice Headphones, good audio Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I recently bought a pair of these boxed as new c/w spare leatherette ear pads off of E Bay to replace my Heil Proset. Failing to Master fitting the spare Ear pads, with nothing to lose, using double sided sticky pads I fitted a set of Heil EP PS ones, which carefully positioned are a perfect fit making the Headphones a nice snug fit. - possibly more comfy than the Kenwood ones? only gave a 4 due to awkwardness of ear pad fitting. 73 Dick g4djc

Get them before they are gone Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Yaesu and Icom have discontinued their traditional headphones for the new 'lightweight'(flimsy) phones. These HS-5's are old time goodness. They even have a cloth cable covering. By the markings on them, the batch was made a while back. I don't know how many Kenwood sells in the course of a year, but I can't believe it's many, So get a pair of these while you still can, they are that good.

FAVORITE Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Unlike stereo headphones which are often times used with HF rigs these Kenwood HS-5 headphones have the correct impedance (8 ohms) and frequency response (400-4000 hz)to really improve the intelligibility of communications audio. They come with foam earpieces installed and extra leather earpieces are included. Switching to the leather earpieces is easy and made all the difference. They totally block out outside sounds and really isolate your ears from anything but the audio from your rig. The phones are extremely comfortable. The 4K hz frequency cutoff is a great advantage over any of the stereo phones and gives great clarity to the received audio. I have tried many other phones and these are really the best I have ever listened to basically because they are tailored to the job at hand and are not 32 ohm 20Khz stereo phones. Worth every penny.

Unmatched for what they are Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I should begin by mentioning that I have the HS-5 Deluxe model...I love these headphones! I am not just a ham, but also an audiophile, so I understand these things. You would not like music streaming through these headphones, but voices will be music to your ears! The frequency response is a perfect 150 Hz to 4 kHz...soooo perfect!

I have to admit, however, that my favorite design characteristic of these headphones is the ability to still hear everything else going on around me. To me, that is a very significant part of what makes these headphones both superb and superior (especially when the XYL is calling me!).

That is, in no way, meant to minimize the importance of the response and the extreme comfort they provide (unmatched, in my opinion), it's just another important detail that SOMEONE REMEMBERED NOT TO FORGET!!

Just my 2ยข,

WI0Q...the radio station.
