The Better RF Company run by W6TER makes specialized accessories for ICOM and other radios. The iMate is made to provide the remote key pad-like functions that are diagrammed in ICOM manuals, but is not made by ICOM. Mainly the iMate adds the flexibility of remotely operating 4 of the functions of the applicable radios (including IC-7800) due to a design flaw in the radios' flexibility of menus.
Before buying the iMate, consider that the supplied cable from it to your radio's mic jack is quite short, limiting where you can place the unit. Too, if you want to use a Heil "ic" mic element, you must use the iMate's 8-pin mic socket. The other selectable mic socket is a mini phone style like on Heil mic lines. However, if you want to switch between your Heil "ic" mic and a 8-pin desk mic, you can not leave both mics plugged in all the time but must change by unplugging and replugging.
These appear to be two draw-backs to an otherwise useful accessory.

The mic cable between the iMate and the rig's mic socket is a suitable 17 inches.
