Review Summary For : CloudLifter model CL-1

Description:
Low-gain microphones typically come with high-impact problems that can frustrate engineers. Unfortunately, many low-output microphones, such as the SM7b, the RE20, and virtually all ribbon microphones are among the best sounding mics out there. Luckily, there's the Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator by Cloud Microphones - a perfect solution to any situation in which you need to cleanly boost a microphone signal before the preamp. Driven by the phantom power circuit on board your mixer, the Cloudlifter CL-1 adds up to +25dB of perfectly transparent gain to your signal, giving low-output mics a major boost which can make even budget microphones sound clean and professional.

Preamp low output mics Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I added this small box just after the Electro-Voice RE27 dynamic mic to boost the audio output of the RE27. Dynamic and ribbon mics have low output and typically force the user to drive the preamp/mic gain too high and results in distortion in the audio. The CL-1 delivers 25db whistle clean gain using the phantom power on the XLR mic cable. Of course the 48V phantom power has to be supplied from a channel strip or small phantom power supply. Using a small supply is cheap and easy. By design, the voltage is NOT passed on to the mic so the CL-1 is a perfect match for low output ribbon and dynamic mics. It will not work with condenser mics as they require the phantom power.

I have what I describe as a "thin voice" that does not drive the mic well unless I really crank up my volume which isn't pleasant for me or the QSO partner. The extra gain supplied from the CL-1 allows me to run all other gain settings in normal ranges and produces a very clean, pleasant signal.

I get many unsolicited audio reports with the current setup which uses only a little compression and almost no EQ. I will not operate low output mics without it.

Cloud sells variable impedance and dual channel models as well.
