well designed Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Instead of investing a fortune for a 817 I preferred to build an ILER-40 and an ILER-20, Compared to many mass production products kits have a big advantage: they can be easily repaired often at a fraction of cost.
The ILER works as advertised. Works directly with just a dynamic capsule. Audio receive is very good. The AGC is a great add-on although it also works well without. The AGC is somewhat more difficult to install because of the many components in a small board. The manual is very detailed and you need to read it quite carefully. The number of components are many so you can build and test in several days. Take your time.

misleading advertisement Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
This review is about an "ILERDDS VFO option" (mentioned in previous posts there) not the transceiver itself, and about some aspects of trade done by EA3GCY vendor. I am sure it's not worth to open designated "ILER DDS VFO" review page here. First impressions after assembly - everything is fine! But then it comes out that unit doesn't work beyond 17.xxx MHz (huge freq hops only) despite being advertised for to work up to 40 MHz. Seller (EA3GCY) acknowledged that it's an uncureable software bug and that's not possible to do anything else than "send it back and THEN money back" accompanied with complaints about health problems etc. I wasn't asking for that but only for to adjust advertising for not to cheat others in the future. For a while numbers 40MHz where omitted in an advertising, but then again.. That's why I wrote this - be careful! My wish to Xavier Solans EA3GCY - stay healthy, be happy and do not cheat others!
Nice doorstop now - may be sometime later will fit somewhere... but not where it was intended.

New MK2 version Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
As a holiday project I bought the new MK2 version of the kit. Good documentation, good component set and good PCB. Took a few evening to build and after the adjustments RX in one go. By a mistake of mine I had some oscillation issues with the microphone amp but after replacing the 741 with a 748 just to be sure the QSO's were rolling in. Happy with the result and would recommend it as a starter kit. Wrote a few pages about my building experiance at : http://www.ph2lb.nl/blog/index.php?page=iler-20-mk2-2

Excellent kit w/ ILERDDS Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Great kit with ILERDDS option.

My only complaint is the bandpass filter seems to be too narrow on the high end (<2.0KHz). I know the capacitors were changed and I hope I used the right value (12pF) and not the ones supplied with the kit (22pF)?

How about a nice cabinet for it?

Quality kit Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
This is a very good kit, using high quality components, PCB, and a well thought out and easy to follow instruction manual. You can download the manual before purchasing the kit, however it is provided as part of the kit on a CD.
Construction of the kit is made easy by the very comprehensive instructions, component lists, and quadrants map. You do not need expensive test equipment to get this transceiver working, I set mine up using just a multimeter and calibrated receiver.
The VXO is stable if you follow the set up instructions provided, and allow the radio to warm up before going on air. Included in the kit is a second PCB with components to build an optional AGC. The transceiver works very well with or without the AGC installed but my preference is to use the transceiver with it install. I set up my kit to cover 14.274MHz to 14.326MHz, a 52kHz section of the 20m band that includes the qrp calling frequency at 14.285MHz. I could get the VXO on my kit to cover 96kHz but as suggested in the manual fine tuning was very difficult and the VXO was less stable. For those who want more band coverage there is the ILER-VFO/DDS kit available for an additional $62.
I had great fun building this transceiver, and have great results using it. My Yaesu transceiver has hardly been used since I built this kit.
