Review Summary For : Yaesu FTdx-1200
Reviews: 125MSRP: 1879
Description:
The FT DX 1200 provides up to 100 Watts on SSB, CW, and FM
(25 Watts AM carrier) and a rugged state of the art highly
balanced receiver circuit configuration for top performance
on today’s crowded bands. Similar to the high end “YAESU FT
DX” series, it uses 32-bit high speed floating point DSP.
Yaesu’s acclaimed superior DSP algorithm is highly effective
in weak signal processing and enhancement. The 1st IF
frequency is protected by selectable 3 kHz, 6 kHz and 15 kHz
roofing filters that effectively attenuate interfering
signals.
Product is in production

What a Radio! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Well this is my first ever review for eHam and i have to say i am proud to be doing a review on the FT-DX1200, I have owned this radio for 2 months now and i am still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor, It is outstanding,

The DNR is just amazing and it works, The audio reports i have had are flawless and everyone is impressed, The looks alone is something to be proud of.

I was after a new HF radio after years of owning several radios from FT817, FT920, IC7000, FT897, and i was after something that was going to be a one buy situation where i would not be looking for along time again, After doing some reading and internet looking and comparing i decided to look further into the DX1200 and slowly after a few weeks decided "You know what i am going to buy it"

I have never looked back and my friends that come over are just as smiley faced as me when they use it.

People say not having the live bandscope is a big flaw, But i sat here one day and really thought about this feature and i have come to the conclusion in my house not having the live bandscope feature works better for me, Why? you ask well let me tell you..

My wife hates radio and i mean it really annoys her. So sitting here at night listening to the noise floor drives her mad. But wait... Lets use the bandscope which mutes the audio and scans away silent.. Oh there's a peak and some action. i can now tune to the correct frequency whit out my wife listen to the noise floor all night. Peace both was.. Happy Days

But seriously if you are after a radio that is just outstanding in performance and quality buy the FT DX1200.

This is one radio that will be sitting on my desk for a long time to come.

OUTSTANDING!!! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Wow!!! What can I say??? That was my first impression just after the first five minutes of use straight out of the box. Super low floor noise with weak station pulled out of no where. I have never owned a Kenwood TS590 but after owning this radio, I have no desire to. I have owned a FT2000, FT1000MP, IC7410 and many other make and model but this FTdx1200 really stands out above all.
I installed the FFT-1 board as soon as I opened the carton… it’s a MUST!!!

So what do I like about this radio???
Lower floor noise level,
Beautiful audio from its internal speaker,
The TFT display is amazing with lots of information and the “S” meter is so smooth,
The roofing filters really do work! Unlike the FT2000,
Narrow CW filter sounds nice and sharp right down to 50Hz,
Narrow SSB filters sound great at 1.8kHz and will go down to 200Hz,
Decoding of CW, RTTY, PSK31 on its own display with the FFT-1 unit installed.
All the DSP functions work extremely well,
The main tuning knob friction adjustment ring is the easiest and best ever plus the super solid construction and fell of this radio is outstanding.
Low cost for a lot of radio!!! $1579 USD plus $189 USD for the FFT-1 From Gigaparts,
Plus many other awesome features to mention.

The things that could have been improved on!
The lack of a RF power adjustment control on the front panel which you have to go to “menu 177” to adjust.
Plus a single “mode” button that only steps one way through the modes.
But all in all, that not a major thing to worry about.

I wanted the FTdx3000 a first but as my budget didn’t stretch that far, I am so please in the FTdx1200 that I have no desire to upgrade to the 3000.

The BEST Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have owned the yaesu ft 1200dx for well over a month now and the rigs performs great. I have also owned the Kenwood ts 590 which is a decent rig as well. I fault the Kenwood on the output power. I am using a Palstar Tuner, the Yaesu will put well over 100 watts on voice peaks on average setting. The 590 is hard pressed to put out more than 35 watts on average and the alc is all over the place. I have also notice power spike with the 590 that the 1200 does not have. The receiver on both rigs are good, if you know how to use the filtering system on the 1200 it will out shine the 590 by just a bit. The receiver is hot and also very quite, signals will jump right out of the mud. I really like the 1200, I am glad I sold the 590 after purchasing the 1200 and I have never regretted it at all. Yaesu did a really good job with this rig building on the FT 950. Also, the filter work very well again read the manual and learn how to get the most out of the rig.

Awesome!!! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Terrific radio, great receiver sensitivity and selectivity through the utilization of IF DSP filters and the roofing filters.

Gotten excellent audio reports with the default factory settings and the supplied hand microphone.

What makes this radio shine, is the superb market value compared to other rigs in this segment, and the sophisticated modern design that distinguishes it from its Kenwood & Icom brethren!

Oh... and the TFT display is to DIE FOR!!!!

Great Radio! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I absolutely love this radio. A pleasure to operate. The receiver is very quiet.

I am not too crazy about menus and first thought I had made a big mistake. After 20 minutes I found how easy the radio was to operate. The menu system is laid out well and easy to access from most keys.

The scope is cool also. I really like the auto mode. For me the scope is as useful as a live scope for locating band activity. Very fast.

Right now you can buy one of these for $1399 from HRO with the mail in rebate. I think this is the best deal going for an HF radio.

As always Yaesu support is great. I had a couple of question about the rigs operation. No long waits on the phone. No telling me to go read the manual.

This rig is just plain fun to operate.

Very excellent! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
And i used to think the OMNI VI+ with all of the filters was the best i had ever used. I guess maybe at the time it was, however in 2013 the FTDX-1200 has far surpassed it. Well done.

so good!!! Time Owned: N.A.
i have bought a yaesu ftdx-1200.
i am impressive of RX especially on cw mode.
it is more quite but if there is qrm we have much solution to improve it.
i like to much the filter sound of dsp and digital filter not like.
compared with icom 7400 and k2 elecraft on cw the ft1200 i think is a good solution.
yaesu have improved the menu system and operate with command, the face is cleare and without setup on menu you have all command on face.
73 for now

A Keeper Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
If your not afraid of experimenting with the menu as with other Yaesu's you will be very surprised what you can get from this Rig. Yes, it's true it doesn't have the bells and whistles of the 3000 and I added the FFT-1 Board and the scope is not real time but neither am I and it fits my budget and needs. It has a very good Display for my changing eyesight. The only downfall is that you have to purchase an external USB box for updates which I think should have been integrated into the unit itself but so far I am very pleased and the Receiver can be tweaked to your liking. A nice Rig worth considering. And Yes, the 3khz Roofing Filter works as was lacking in my FT-950 at least to my ear but also a very good rig. 73!
