Better Than The Canadian Amateur Magazine Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
When I can I will purchase a copy of 73 magazine It is interesting to read Waynes editorials Lets face it most of the editorials in other magazines consist of alot of crying and whinning about the possible loss of spectrum and other boring repetitive dooms day senarios for our hobby.I find that the advertising in 73 is more towards the experimenter and not the appliance ops . the magazine may be thin but has a lot more interesting ads and content than The Canadian Amateur Magazine The official Mag of Radio Amateurs of Canada.

Again, great mag Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I support all of the major ham magazines. I think each gives something unique to the hobby. I fear for the day when we are down to only one.

73 is a worthy magazine. Especially for experimenters and builders. Many projects from FAR circuits are out of 73. If you are easily offended by unusual opinions, I'd ignore the Wayne Green columns. The articles are good and interesting and the mag is largely free of advertising bulk.

Give it a try. 73s....

Earlier 5-star review posted by WF7I on 2002-07-12

I subscribed to 73 back in the late 80s/early 90s till I got too busy with college to read it much. I very much enjoyed the magazine for its technical articles. It has long been known for them and from a recent read of the magazine, it still is.

Wayne Greene is a character, but he is not the main focus of the magazine! Sometimes I'd read his columns, sometimes not. The reviews I've read on here seem to be people who get overly bent out of shape by one man's opinion. Lighten up!! I didn't agree with all of his stuff either, but I focused more on the magazine articles than on the opinions.

If you are a technical-orientated ham radio operator or radio experimenter, then 73 is a MUST for your shelf. If you are strictly a contest operator, then 73 is probably not for you. The artiles are well-written and enthusiastic and often cutting-edge. I think the magazine content represents more of the old-school hams who are builders and innovators.

I have noticed that it has become very thin. Seems to be devoid of advertising. I do hope the magazine does not go under. I think in these days, there are so few people interested in the technology that this type of magazine is becoming a harder sell.

a good waste of glossy paper Time Owned: more than 12 months.
when I first subscribed (Issue 183) it was THEE great magazine, later, it became a computer magazine, then it became a new gear review, all the while getting thinner and thinner. As for Wayne, well, momma told me if I cannot say anything nice ____________________.

Poor sums it up Time Owned: N.A.
Wayne is Wayne and 73 is 73. All the good columnists have left. If you get a chance, read "Run, Wayne, Run"--it is an eye opener. Used to subscribe, but nothing of interest anymore.

73 got me into hobby! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I read the bashing of 73 and got angry. 73 is what is getting me to study for my Novice ticket! All the articles on building got me to wondering more about the hobby and I ended up studying for the Novice. I take the test tomorrow. Wish me luck.

73 is great and Wayne is insane but so what. I think he is funny.

You guys rating 73 a zero, get a freakin life!

73 is the best Time Owned: more than 12 months.
From my "call", you can tell that I like provocative ideas. 73 provides that. Wayne is not scared to speak his mind and I like that. You never know what is going to come out of his mouth next.

If you've got a pair, buy it. Otherwise, wimp out and go for something lighter, like Poptronics.

I'm out......

Best magazine of all!!!! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I love 73, and Wayne Green kicks ass. All of you who hate him have no pulse. 73 is the only real ham magazine. All the others are just a bunch of cheesy ads and ARRL pandering losers. You guys who give it a zero have closed minds and are scared of new ideas. Why does it bother you so much that Wayne thinks we never went to the moon? Who cares? At least the stuff he writes is off the wall and interesting, and not lock-step with boring humdrum QST garbage.

73 also is the only one with real construction articles. This is what MADE this hobby, not a bunch of mike-squeezing appliance operating no-code ex-CBers!

Want a real ham mag, get 73. Want to be a CBer, go for QST and read the ads all weekend and have fun.

provocative! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Greetings All: I have read the reviews here, & I chuckled at many of them. I bought a lifetime
subscription for $37.00, so you know that wasn't yesterday, & Wayne still has the capacity to infuriate the rank & file. It is interesting that the majority of those who are outraged by his editorials, & especially those who cite the "NASA mooned America" commentaries, ascribe his
editorial content to Wayne himself. He merely talks about Mr. Renee & his book & the convincing case Renee makes. Read Renee's book....it is DAMNED thought provoking. I doubt that the detractors have read any of the books Wayne has talked about. The "Secret life of plants" has some experiments that anyone can duplicate easily & inexpensively, & they are mind blowing. I can't help but wonder if the fact that Wayne has made millions(at least $60 million) isn't a factor in the rancor I hear expressed. A lot of the drum beating he does is to wind people, & if the diatribes I have read here are a bell-weather, he is eminently successful.
73 magazine targets a specific segment of the amateur community, & its publication is subsidised heavily by Wayne I am certain. The reason the magazine is
thin is that advertisers for amateur products are a conservative bunch by nature, & Wayne's overt editorials, his statements about the League(notice that the League has NEVER sought legal remedy...unusual in the most litigious society in the world!) & his lack of "political correctness" unnerves the advertisers & they are reluctant to be identified with the magazine.
There exists a cadre of amateurs who believe that governments are NEVER involved in conspiracies, never lie to their citizens, and are models of decorum. The most cursory scanning of world newspapers, periodicals & radio broadcasts from say...the BBC would disabuse virtually anyone of that notion! I believe that we need to support all our amateur magazines & one another, presenting a united front to governments & our fellow citizens, rather than engaging in mud-slinging. Like all of us, Wayne Greene has his faults. My personal opinion is that he has done more for amateur radio in the USA , Canada, & other countries than
most other hams. Can the detractors claim equality in this arena? I personally admire & respect Wayne for his accomplishments. For those who call him arrogant & a braggart, I can only quote Winston Churchill who once observed.." If you don't blow your own horn, who else will blow it for you?" Few of us amateurs have the will or the wherewithall to supply a vehicle such as 73 magazine for our hobby, essentially as a service to the amateur community. Wayne never made a lot of money from 73...indeed, I suspect that his other publications paid many of 73's bills. I gave the magazine a five because it has carried the flag of amateur radio for 4 decades, & provided a direction for many readers to start their own business, to explore new modes, & in general to think for themselves, instead of being told how to think. I thank you , Mr. Greene!
Cheers! Brian, VE6XX
