Wasn't Quite Ready For Prime Time Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I originally purchased the 144/220 version of the KG-UV920P-A for its crossband repeat capabilities. As it turns out that function didn't work very well because of front end overload even at the lowest power settings.

As earlier mentioned, the volume controls are not linear.

As earlier mentioned the receiver will not stop and open up the audio while it is in scan mode.

I have been in touch with the vendor who has been in touch with Wouxun checking to see if there is some sort of resolution with the scanning issue.

I will update if we get a resolution.

Decent rig for the price Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've been using the 144/220 version of this rig for 3-4 years now. It's one of the few 144/220 rigs out there, and my old Kenwood TM-621A doesn't fit in my car (I use it as a base rig now), so I took a chance on the Wouxun.

It's worked out well for me. I know there's programming software, but I've had no problem programming it through the keypad. I really like the speaker in the microphone, which lets me mount the rig under the seat and the head remotely on my dashboard with no need for an external speaker. It's worked great on both bands for repeater and simplex use. I've even cross band repeated into 2 meter nets using my HT transmitting on 220.

It's not perfect. It can be tough to find the menu setting you want to change since they seem to be in random order. While it's true dual receive with a 144 freq on one side and a 220 (or 440) freq on the other, it only receives one freq at a time if you're using the same band on both sides. Not a big deal, just something to be aware of.

Durability isn't as good as the Japanese brands. A column of pixels on the display has burnt out. The volume controls now act a little funky, occasionally self-adjusting a little with an annoying BEEP-BEEP confirmation afterward in the middle of your QSO. These are minor issues, but I've never had anything like this from my 30 year old Kenwood.

Still, the rig has served me well, and I'd recommend it. Don't expect the high quality of a Japanese rig, but it's a good deal for the price, especially if you're looking for the elusive 144/220 dual bander.

KG-UV920P 144/220 Version Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Has one VERY annoying problem....the volume control is very non-linear...0= Off, 1=Low, 2= medium to High, 3-max very high! Distortion occurs at 4-5 and up. Definitely a design problem. Other fuctions seem OK with just a few annoying beeps, etc. But a nice 144/220 Dual Bander.

Could have been a nice radio - it it worked Time Owned: more than 12 months.
What could have possibly possessed the designers of this radio to include a "SCAN" function that stops on active channels BUT DOES NOT PRODUCE ANY AUDIO!?! Once the radio stops on the active channel, you have to take the radio out of scan mode for it to let you hear the audio. The radio has other quirks, but the Scan-with-no-audio is the signature characteristic of the US version of the Wouxun KG-UV920P-A

Scaning Problems Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
After my experience with my KG-UV9D and my KG-UV950P I decided to buy this version to be installed on my car.The radio are very well constructed compared with others Chinese radios and easy to program with the computer software included. Unfortunately the operation of this radio are some different from his bigger brother KG-UV950P. With this one I can't scan on both sides simultaneously during memory or frequency scan, or even I can't scan on one side and transmit on the other like my KG-UV950P. Also when you start scan it don't stop when a carrier are detected and if stop don't open audio, no matter what setting you program on menu 10 (SC-REV). Other than that the radio don't have any big issue that I notice at the moment, if find something else I will update this review.

Junk!!! Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
After a nine month battle with Wouxun, there radio failed and they refuse to replace or refund there product. Do not buy their radios; they will not stand behind them. Customer service is absolutely poor.

I bought this radio in January of 2014 from a dealer that was retiring and was liquidating his inventory. The radio was a Fall 2013 version which was the newest at the time and had a one year factory warranty. I was advise that if there were any issues that Wouxun would take care of it.

I received the radio, installed it and programmed it up. Everything was working fine for approximate 6 weeks. Then one day I tried to transmit on the radio and no one was hearing me. The receive was fine but no one could hear me. So I put it on a meter and the radio was transmitting way less than a half a watt, after a friend of mine examined the radio it was determined the driver went bad and the radio had no transmit power.

So I contacted the dealer I bought the radio from and he put me in contact with Wouxun direct so they can fix the problem.

After several emails back and forth I was not getting anywhere with them to fix the radio. When I was at the International Wireless conference in Las Vegas in March I even tried to talk to the people from Wouxun to see if we could fix the problem, basically we couldn’t understand each other and they took my contact information.

Sometime after more than dozens of emails later, they agreed to send me a replacement PCM at a cost of $45 shipping that I had to pay. (Great warranty right). I received that in about three weeks, I got the package and got everything put back together and reinstalled in my truck. The radio now does not program with the software. I tried every software that they have on their website. NO luck!!! Ugh!

So here goes the emails again. Dozens and dozens more, they try to work through so many solutions that do not work as usual.

Well sometime in June they refer me to another Wouxun dealer state side, they wanted me to ship the radio to them, which I did at $15 my cost. Once that dealer received the radio they did verify that there was a problem with the radio and it needed another PCM.

Now this was in June, They got the PCM from Wouxun in October. Installed it and I guess still had problems communicating with the radio. Then…as per the work order, they got it to program with some sort of software on a disk. So they shipped me the radio back and software on this disk…um ok. O the radio now has bent volume knobs by the way. It was not liked this when I shipped it to them.

Soooo.. I get the radio try to program it again and it does NOT program still! So I try loading this “special” software they sent me that suppose to work. Right! After I load this software onto my PC, it looks like nothing more than the regular software that they have online, but the stuff they sent me looks like a blank excel sheet. All the lettering is missing from the software. O and it still does not work.

So I email Wouxun again and explain everything to them, they copy the repair facility to try to figure out what’s wrong. The repair facility stated it was programming fine when they had it on the bench and I had to use the software that sent me, which is not even the right software since I sent it to Wouxun and they said it was the wrong version. So someone is lying here……Bottom line is that this repair facility did not want to get in the middle of this since they did not sell me the radio. Wouxun more or less dumped this on their lap.

So after several more emails back and forth Wouxun said that I could pay for another PCM to be shipped to me. I said hell no!! I am not dumping anymore money into this thing. I have paid way too much to get this fix. I either need a total new replacement or refund.

They denied me and said no that they could not help me anymore. So I’m SOL and out of $335. Great!

Bottom line, their radios are junk and even though there is a warranty, they do not stand behind it. No wonder why so many Wouxun dealers are dropping the products. Even when I talk to some of the dealers, they have issues working with the company and Wouxun expects the dealer to absorb most of the repair cost and replacement.

They are a cheap product!!!!! Stay away!!!!!!!

PS - I have all the emails saved about this as my proof.

K3MD Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Have had for 5 months.
Obtained for $270 USD on EBay.
For the price it can't be beat.
It got a negative review in QST.. you NEED the RT Systems programming software. It is VERY easy to program from this software, and you can take your laptop out to the car to program in a different route you got from the ARRL TravelPlus. You cannot directly program from TravelPlus as in the Kenwood TM-V71A... you must manually put in each repeater in the program.. easy.
No problem with intermod or power drop out. It would be nice to get a readout in frequency of the memory channels, otherwise it would be a 5. The programming cable is included in the base price.

Just Great ! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Bought this @ $279/E249.
That is a very competative price.
The known shortcomings from the R-version has been addressed:
+ intermodulation an harmonics much better
+ rotary knob: working ok now.
+ broadband receive has been limited, so better front end

I love the 3 power positions (@Kenwood: learn from it!)

Great performance, especially regarding the price.
Think you can go better? Spend more money and buy K,Y, or I. Not for me! This one's sufficient.
