Review Summary For : YAESU MD 100A8X Dexk-Top Microphone w/Tone Control
Reviews: 93MSRP: $125.50 @ R&L Electronics
Description:
Yaesu, traets this as their top-of -the-line high end Mic, and as well they should. I have used Heil, Sure ICOM and other various microphones, which are from stand alone to hand mics, not that I'm the expert. But from the time I have incorporated the MD 100, the audio reports have been nothing less than "Excellent", so I'll let nealry 400 QSOs, from the mics use speak for themself! I use one for HF and the other for UHF/VHF with assured audio quality. W8DMC

great looking but now much better! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
First of all: a nice looking microphone but it doesn't give the punch I was looking for.....

I do own one of these a couple of years now and used it with my FT-897, FT-817 and now FT-2000..
Last week I build a W2IHY equalizer and noice gate and now I have a great combination!

Finally I do have more power and the possibilty to change my audio almost professionally!

Now I am in business for the pile-ups!

Hope to meet you on 10-20-40 metres!

so so Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have had this Mic in junction with my 920 for over 4 years now. I just cant seem to like this mic no matter how hard I try. It looks nice and is built good, however I dont like the audio quality. I get better complements with the hand mic. I dont know maybe its just my voice? Then again I dont like the 920 either.

However if your looking for a solid built mic for your yaesu transceiver give it a shot.

Looks great on the table and so does to feel it. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I just got one yesterday. When you see the box you know there is something great inside, and indeed it is. Nicely packed, all the parts are in different plastic pack. Its great to have this kind of arrangement what they did with the cable, you can use the same cable to connect different types of socket (round and RJ45 type)in the radio end.

I was thinking how to rewire the connector to fit my old Yaesu System600 radio. But it works without any modification. PTT works, Microphone works, Up-Down works. Don't know yet if the other filter and tone control works or not.

Overall it's nice to have it for DX then holding the handheld microphone all the time.

Nice Mic Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Well I got mine to work with FT-847 on all bands and modes, the audio is good, and the tone control is ok.

I´m thinking on buying another one for my FT-90r.

Great Microphone! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I recently purchased a FT-897D and wanted to replace the hand mic with something better. Gigaparts was running a sale recently and I bought one at a good price. The mic is well-constructed and I have had nothing but good audio reports with it. Beware that quickly using the up-down buttons on the mic will power off the radio or power it on. I understand there is a fix for this, but I have not attempted it yet.
The high and low pass buttons on the bottom of the mic are a nice touch for sustomizing your audio. I would say it is very close in comparison to my ICOM SM-20. Overall, a good value and a nice addition to many Yaesu rigs.

Great Audio Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I use MD-100A8X with my FT-950. Audio is better than supplied handy microphone. Modulation is powerful and have more gain than supplied mic. Is necessary to use compressor on trx. MD-100A8X is powerful microphone I love it.

They finally got it to work Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Seems I violated the 'Product Review' rules. It got deleted.

So.... suffice it to say, I seem to have the only 100A8X Desk-Top Microphone w/Tone Control (on earth) that is *fully functional* with the FT 897D. After two trips back to Yaesu.

See: Yaesu/Vertex Standard repair - for the details. Sorry about posting in the wrong place.

nice microphone Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I use mine on an FT857D (simular to the 897 only a mobile radio). Yes, if you rotate the channel switch all the way left or right it turns the radio off (it also turns it back on). Big deal, if you press the fast button on the stock mike and are a bit slow in releasing it does the same thing. After a bit of use you learn where to stop to enable the scan feature. The manual also lists the radios that the mike works with. It also states that it will work with others but the scan function may not work. If your radio isn't specifically listed your milage may vary (the 857/897 series being one series that is not listed as the mike being 100% compatable with) so do a little research before buying. Now (stepping down from the soap box). I was aware that the mike was not 100% compatable with my radio when I bought it but for the great audio out on all bands and modes the fact that I couldn't enable fast scan from the mike was a small price to pay for a great preforming mike at under 150 dollars.(I like the fact that I can turn the radio on and off from the microphone). I have to agree with the prior posts. Grade the product not the service especially if the product isn't 100% compatable with your radio to begin with.

Had mine for 10yrs Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I'll have to agree with the last 2 reviews. I've had mine for 10 years now without a problem. I bought mine when I bought the FT-920 in 1997. Over the years I've gotten many unsolicited good audio reports. Never had any maintenance issues. I wish all mics were as reliable as my MD-100A8X.

Great Microphone Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I bought mine second-hand more than a year ago, and I have always got excellent reports. I normally use it together with my FT-1000MP, but have also used it with my FT-897D - and always
great modulation reports. But when using it with the FT-897D it shuts the radio off, if you use
the fast button. It change the frequency, but if you keep the button pressed the radio shuts off.
If you cut the wire,(no.4) the problem is gone.
