Review Summary For : YAESU MD 100A8X Dexk-Top Microphone w/Tone Control
Reviews: 93MSRP: $125.50 @ R&L Electronics
Description:
Yaesu, traets this as their top-of -the-line high end Mic, and as well they should. I have used Heil, Sure ICOM and other various microphones, which are from stand alone to hand mics, not that I'm the expert. But from the time I have incorporated the MD 100, the audio reports have been nothing less than "Excellent", so I'll let nealry 400 QSOs, from the mics use speak for themself! I use one for HF and the other for UHF/VHF with assured audio quality. W8DMC

Hum when used with FT-1000MP Mark-V Field Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
There is a problem with hum when this otherwise excellent microphone is used with the FT-1000MP Mark-V Field. The shield from the MIC element head is wired to pin 5 (PTT GND) instead of pin 7 which is the MIC GND. This wiring mistake is in the microphone body, not the base or cable. This is not a problem when used with the FT-1000MP Mark-V (200 watt version) nor another radio such as the FT-847. A ground loop induced hum takes place when the Field radio is used with its internal supply only. Yaesu is kept quiet on this, and it may be OK on recent inventory. I recently had a warranty repair of the radio returned to me with no problem found before realizing that the problem was with the MD-100 as it was experienced with several MD-100 units. Yaesu did tell me to reurn the microphones, but would not elaborate on the fix. Just thought all of you should be aware.

Excellent Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have owned a MD 100 for approx 4 years now and do like the mic in every way going. The reason for my review is to inform anyone interested in cutting out a little more unwanted noise is what is known as the qsl mod. Simply unscrew the front of the mic and roll a peice of card ( qsl card ?) into a tube that will slide indie the mic head to reduce noise entering the mic through the slots on the side of the mic head. This results in most of the sound entering the mic to come from just where you want it to eg the mouth. Thanks go to LZ1JY for letting me know of the mod.G0NVD

Sounds great Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I use the MD100a8x with my FT847, so I'm always switching between full response for local FM work and filtered for SSB. I find that with even my compromised antennas and power (I can only run with indoor antennas) I can get through pile-ups in a modest amount of time. I get great audio reports on 2M. The only thing I could possibly complain about is that the channel slider switch feels a little cheap, but I don't use that anyway so it's not a big deal for me.

Great microphone Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I got an Md-100A8X thrown in with an FT-920 deal. I probably would have used the hand mic but it was missing. I get great audio reports and have no trouble getting through pileups. I run it with the preemphasis OFF and the equalization (menu U-51 on the FT-920, OFF.

I can tell you it's a great Microphone it has improved the Transmit audio 100% on SSB and the tone filtering is great, gives you that extra punch to get though pile up's. 73's WH6LR/EM04

Excellent Microphone Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Hi,
I bought recently and I connected it on Yaesu FT-990 using a W2IHY between them. Outstanding audio. Hi-fi, heavy-audio, excellent reports, really a good deal. The W2IHY provides the phantom power (5 volts) to the MD-100's active filter. If you want the W2IHY EQ Settings, feel free to email me. I recommended to Ft-990 and FT-1000D.

Best I ever used Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Hi ...

since 2 weeks I have the MD100A8X in use and it is really sounding superfine. Nothing but good audio reports ... also when I did not ask for a audio report some stations mentioned the fabulous audio quality of the mic.

It's really worth it's money
