A Needed Accessory Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I used my FT-857d for most of a year before getting this filter. In general, things were just fine. However, during CW contests, if there were a loud signal within 2.4 kHz of a weaker station I was trying to work, it would be almost impossible to finish the QSO because the flutter from the AGC would change the volume rapidly with the stronger signal. It was also a problem if I were chasing weak DX and there were loud stations up 1. In short, the selectivity of the FT-857d on its own was poor, so strong signals would still get through even with the DSP on.

To fix that issue, I bought this filter and the SSB filter. Installation was very easy, and took ~10 minutes.

Although there is little difference when few signals are on the band, the difference is very clear when the band is crowded. CW is now much more usable during a contest. I no longer need to steer >2.4 kHz away from any big gun stations to work anyone whose signal is weaker than S9+10. When combined with the DSP, things get even better. It works very well, and I'd strongly recommend it if you want the greatly improved selectivity.

817 Filter for CW / Digi Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Absolutely! I have a 300Hz filter in my little 817 and WOW what a huge difference. With this filter, the FT-817 is transformed from a usable CW rig to a very good CW rig.

Required for CW Time Owned: more than 12 months.
CW is a pleasure on the FT-857 with the filter installed. Not only is it practically required for CW, but digital modes (RTTY, especially) greatly benefit from the additional filtering. Installation is a 10 minute job (and that includes taking your time and wearing an anti-static strap for added safety) and only requires a screwdriver.
