Can sticky goo oozing out of a TEN-TEC 777 cause cancer? Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I purchased new, a TEN-TEC Model 777 DX Pro headset some years back. Out of the box, it worked fine. Heavy and not the most comfortable headset but there are worse. The boom mic was decent. I am sending my 7-ish year old 777 headset to the dump.

As the years went by, the plastic swivel assemblies and rear shells of the ear pieces began to get sticky with some sort chemical, oozing out of the plastics. No kidding. I didn't have the heart to toss them out a long time ago but I also have abstained from using them since this issue started Oozing crude oil or whatever it is, not exactly something you want to touch, let alone put on your head. I took them off the rack today (July 1, 2022) and the oozing, sticky goo is worse than before. I have no choice but to toss it out. Cut off the coil cord because it is still good but sadly, this headset has to go. While I could take it apart to save some of the innards, it is not worth handling the sticky goo unless I used gloves but I think not worth it.

I have KOSS Professional stereo headsets that about 40 years old and they still work fine and pretty much look like new still. Even the bakelite parts, cloth covered steel band and cloth covered cord on my really old RMCA military headset is still in great jworking and decent appearance condition. I hate to toss out a completely functional 777 but that ooz is terrible and maybe hazardous. Hopefully not so bad that it can cause cancer but seriously, I am not taking any chances. If it were not for the plastics, the functional items worked ok. Hard not to give it anything but an Awful rating. If it were only a few years old, my rating could have been Good, with only a bit of discomfort to wear them over time.

Not as good as it started out Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Once upon a time I had a Heil ProSet Plus, which managed to fall apart more or less on its own. The mic element switch quit working, the phase switch broke, the headband adjust never did. I looked around for a replacement (taking Heil products off the list) and among others found the TenTec 777 boomset. Ten Tec has always done right by me so I went ahead and got one. The 777 has been in service twice as long as the Heil was before something went wrong. The connection at the headset end of the mic gooseneck became intermittent. The housing of the headset is swaged together so was very hard to try and get into for repairs. But now, a year later, all the rubber pieces are deteriorating. They are as sticky as black electrical tape. A boomset is either on my head or on the operating table, probably treated with more care than anything else in the station. I'd sure like to find a boomset as comfortable as the TenTec 777 that would last more than a couple years.

Good value for money Time Owned: more than 12 months.
My 777 I paired with my Orion I and it is a good performer. Only complaint is the ear pieces are not very large. Seems like a good deal compared to others. Enjoy

This is a keeper. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
It's very strong, good ear pads, good receive and transmit audio. I'm using it on an old Flex SDR 1000. I bought it because my Heil broke and the Heil would pick up sounds from all over the house no mater what the audio mic gain was set to. The 777 is a Very close-talk mic. Use it if your near by equipment is noisy or you're in a noisy environment.

Very Good Headset Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I had a bad experience with a cheap eBay headset. While the headphone portion was OK it was uncomfortable after only a few minutes. Worse the audio reports from the microphone were essentially terrible. I finally decided to buy a quality headset and owning a Ten Tec Omni VII I decided to try the Ten Tec headset.

First of all this headset is comfortable. I can wear it for an hour or two at a time and not feel at all uncomfortable so it should be good for several hours (such as Field Day). It also fits around the ear so it blocks out most ambient noise without feeling like a vise. Very nice.

The quality of the received audio is very good and the headset really helps me in understanding the audio in weak signals. The audio reports I've received on transmit have been good to excellent.

So why only four stars? Because of one small nit I have to pick with the DX Pro Headset- the headphones are too sensitive. My adjustment range on my AF control is basically from 0 to 6 percent. While that works it would be nice to be able to use a larger range of adjustment to really fine-tune the received audio. That is really my only complaint and it is something I can live with.

Bottom line this is a quality headset that gives great results.

Good value headset Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
The Ten-Tec Model 777 headset provides good performance and good value. It is durable with robust construction. The microphone boom arm is extremely heavy duty.

Earphone receivers are comfortable, around the eat type - although they are not extremely large, they should encircle the operator's ears and rest on the head, instead of crushing the ear against the head as on-ear models often do. Earphone sound reproduction is very good. Not exactly audiophile quality, but very good for communication audio employed in ham radio. The closed back earphone receivers attenuate ambient noise in the operating environment.

The microphone is very good, providing a full range sound, but without too much bass, so it has just the right amount of clarity and punch one desires for crisp, clean and punchy speech reproduction. Not as full, dull and thick as a HEIL HC5, and not as thin and rash (sibilant) as the HEIL HC4 - kinda just right in the middle.

Headset may need some careful adjustment as it comes with a substantial clamping force. You may like it right out of the box, but others may want to stretch it a bit, and you can adjust the tension by carefully pulling the earphone receivers apart.

Backed by Ten-Tec, which is famous for providing excellent reliable service after the sale. A headphone junkie with a pile of broadcast and studio quality headsets, I sold mine set to another ham who needed a good, durable, headset for a low price.

Just MY take... // K8JHR //

The Ten Tec 777 DX PRO is a really good,
I replaced my old heil proset plus with new ten tec.
Today I couldn't find a capsule that would sound
as the hc4 hc5 and heil, new HC6 isn't good for DX and not "pushes"as the new Ten Tec 777.
Try the test on my youtube channel where I recorded
an OM a friend where alternates between ten tec 777 with proset hc6 and proset plus.
