Works better than hamstick Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I operate mobile with a Yaesu ft-900 with auto tuner. Tuner is great for working entire band on any antenna. I used to operate with hamsticks. Worked okay, but sold them at a hamfest last month and bought the hustler small mast and a 10,15,20, and 40M resonator. Definately outperforms hamstick an is more compact on the truck. Also is capable of running multibanded.

Hustler Mobile Antenna +++++++++ Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This is a great antenna! I first used them in the early 70's, and it was easy to work from California to Florida even on 75 meter SSB. I am surprised that a few people have had bad experiences with them. However, I speculate that the poor performance was due to poor installation. You really can't expect superior performance if you use a magnet mount. It is quite elementary, you need a good ground. AND I mean you NEED a good ground! IF you want good mobile performance with any antenna a magnetic mount or bumper mount WILL not cut it. The hustler is a superior antenna, and with a good ground you will not be disappointed. I hard mounted my mast directly to the car. I used signficant grounding, even to the point of tapping off the coaxial cable's sheild and grounding it to the car's body about every 12". Any mobile antenna needs a good ground. Do this, and you will be well pleased. 73 de WN4OAA

DOES WHAT I NEED Time Owned: more than 12 months.
For the money, I am happy with the hustler mobile vert. I have it mounted on rear bumper of my truck with a short strap to chassis ground.

Only complaint is the fact they are single band. I have the adapter to hold 3 coils and it works well as long as you support the beast with some monofilament.

Will spare you the "I worked VU land" comments, cuz I didn't. But I have worked a lot of DX with it.

Give it a try.

Would like to see some redesign!!! Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Hustlers were the first HF antenna I had any experience with other than modified and home made CB/10 meter antennas. I got a set of them after buying an older ICOM706.

Good Points

I used mine in an existing magmount on top of my minivan with a short mast. They were pretty easy to setup and get going. The fact that I could have up to 4 bands with out getting out of the van made a big difference. The price was also right.

Bad points.

1. Do not get these coils wet. They just stop working.

2. Band width. I guess we have to give up something.

3. Construction. Watch out, it doesnt take much to break one of these.

4. The short mast is almost useless. I had to finally run a closed loop of insulated wire around my luggage rack for counterpoise. Doing this drasticly improved my receive.

5. Multi band adapter stinks. I broke 3 of them before I too apart one of the CB groundplane kits and used it as my multiband adapter.

For a beginner, or some one that can use a 54" mast, they may work great. I would not say that I would never use them again, but I would like to see some updates on the design. Anyone interested in my setup can drop me a line, I will be glad to show you some pictures.

Great Custoemr Service Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have just had a very satisfying experience with a New-Tronics employee which makes me a believer in their products. I sent an email on Monday morning requesting the cost and shipping for a damaged swivel mount.

On Tuesday, I received a call from Gary, which all the information I needed to get the part in the mail to me on Tuesday, today. This is great customer service. Now if some other manufacturers and dealers would get on the customer service bandwagon……..

They will get my business from now on when it comes to mobile antennas.

Still the best. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Started using Hustler antennas in the early 80s with good results. Using a ICOM 706MII in my Dodge Strutas and after doing a lot of testing the Hustler 40meter does the best job for my application, tried an ATAS100 and a OUTBACKER PURTH+ a Hamstick and a Antron, The ATAS100 had to much wind drag where I had it mounted, the Hamstick and the Antron mayed noise when driving down the road at freeway speeds and did not match down as well the Outbacker. I use a small amplifer, and a MO4 shaft so the antenna is about 55inchs mounted on left corner of the trunk. The ears are as good as the other antennas but will handle 400 watts and does not get hot and there is no wind noise and not much drag it covers from 7225 to 7300 with low SWR. I use a Clearspeach DSP speaker in this system. This system can hear as good as it transmits, with the Outbacker stations would always hear me but say I was just above the noise level and harder to copy and it was rated for only 150 watts but had no wind noise and was easy to change bands and would do 80 meters but was down quite a fue DB but did talk 600+ miles on most days in the early morning.

Great Mobile Antenna Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have used the Hustler standard resonators for about 4 years. I use them with a MO-4 (22 inch) mast on the back of my Cavalier. I have worked over 100 countries from my car in casual work-comute and lunchtime sessions. I have great SWR across all the bands and am amazed at how well the system works.
I use the triband adapter and run 4 bands at once (10, 15, 17, 20). I can add 40 or 80m but then cannot get in my garage.
The magnet Hustler advertises is not strong enough for the system; I use a tri-mag ProAm Valor magnet; speeds up to the legal limit are of course only tested; I suspect over 100mph is safe!
I highly recommend Hustler mobile antennas; if you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Will not buy another of these Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I use to think the world of their products; used them for years. Gosh, I've owned at least six different HF masts at one time or another (darn it, they just don't like garages;-)

I purchased a new mast; MO-2 in August, 2001. It had a problem- the clutch sleeve does not go all the way up to the angle bracket. I thought at first it was me. NOPE. I contacted the factory who admitted it has been re-designed using stainless steel instead of plated brass, but it should still work the same. After many emails at THEIR request I sent my mast back to the factory. They returned it later saying 'The sleeve slides up to the midway point as it is supposed to. In the past they may have slid further up, but then we ran into the problem of the sleeve not staying up over a period of time. I don't recall the sleeve ever sliding up to the angle bracket.'

Hogwash. Even their instruction sheet says 'push the knurled sleeve up so that it is touching the angle bracket'.

Now my mast has been falling over! The sleeve doesn't stay up. I've had to install a hose clamp on the mast to keep the sleeve in place. To top it off, they (the hustlers) refused to pay shipping on my mast, even though they asked me for it and said I would not be out any for freight.

They may have been a good design 20 years ago but after all I've been through this year, I will never buy from them again. All my hustler parts will be sold real cheep as soon as I put up a screwdriver.

Anyone who wants all the sorted details can email me for a more complete report.
Don't buy from them!

Try 'em all...... Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have been using the Hustler verticals for over 35 years. I use the 80 meter coil to hold the adapter for three other coils for 10, 15 & 20 meters. I used a tuner inside the vehicle and tuned every band I wanted. I used the low power coils and never lost one. I placed the adapter so the three other coils hung upside down. It didn't look so " outer spacey" that way. Still worked as well. I used the antenna on three pickup trucks, one van, one mini van and three cars. I have used it with bumper mounts and side mounts with no difference in performance. Try one, I think you'll like it.

20m Resonator on 4 ft Mast Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I have the 20m resonator on a 4 ft mast mounted to the rear bumber of my mini-truck w/camper shell. The mast puts the resonator about 1 ft above the left rear corner of the camper shell. Works great! Some directionality towards front right. Steering wheel now acts as a rotor when moving. I've worked 53 DXCC entities with this and my Radio Shack HTX-10 since Feb. 2001.
