Good Antenna for low BUCKS. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have been running the Hustler for a very long time and I have found if you buy the larger coil and remove the cover, remove the screws and remove the coil, drill some holes(1/8 in the drum)Don't remove or chip the red coating on the coil. replace the coil and top and screws and spray paint the coil with clear Krylon abt 5 coats.Don't replace the COVER. You will find that the heat build up you had befor is history and it tunes much easer.(tune for lowest swr and install a matching coil) I use 40 meters most of the time and my 40 meter coil has abt 100 + kc band width and runs nice and cool.
Try it, I belive you will like your Hustler better than befor.

Old is good Time Owned: more than 12 months.
First licensed in 1962, I've been using a Hustler system mobile almost 40 years now and find it consistently gives great performance for the most cost-effective mobile ham antenna system available. Other "advances" come and go, but the Hustler just keeps going and going like the Energizer Bunny.

Now mounted on a 1994 GMC Vandura conversion van, I store the resonators plus a spare lower mast in a piece of PVC pipe with the cap glued on one end and the other open to facilitate grabbing which-ever resonator I need.

I also find MFJs little capacitance matching unit (MFJ-910) helps with tuning.

Convenient, but poor from an electrical standpoint Time Owned: unknown months.
For years I've used Hustlers on all of the HF bands. Now and then I'd burn out a coil when running 200 watts from inside the house and a coax line out to the car. I didn't think much of it. Then when I LEARNED something about antennas, especially mobile antennas, I realized that there was a lot of loss in the coil causing the heating. (wasted energy) So, my solution was to purchase the Hustler KW coils.. Larger coil, less loss, right? Wrong. Hustler has evidently made a "marketing" decision to actually DESIGN loss into the larger coils in order to keep SWR meters happy. The larger coils just dissipate the heat better, but they still make just as much of it. Normally a larger coil would have less loss and lower the feedpoint impedence of the antenna. (better performance) This, however, would make an SWR meter read something other than 1:1 at resonance and require a small amount of tuning to make the line flat. So Hustler, assuming we hams worship the SWR god, put the loss back in to the coil increasing total circuit resistance to get closer to 50 ohms and sapping a big chunk of RF power in the process. Well, I tossed the whole thing in favor of W6AAQ's DK3 "Screwdriver" antenna. So far I've run up to 200 watts with it sitting still in the driveway and no perceptable heating. Contacts I make on 40 and 20 can't believe I'm mobile and I regularly get unsolicited compliments on signal strength. 75 meter contacts are easy as I can work just about anything I can hear. The remote tuning is an advantage of course, but efficiency is more important to me. I don't change bands that often while under way. I also bought Henry Allen's Bugcatcher for serious 75 meter mobiling. NOTHING can touch the performance of that thing. Overall the Hustler system is convenient with it's quick-disconnect masts and other accessories, but for performance I'd look elsewhere... it's likely only about a 3db (or so) signal loss but mobile work needs all it can get on the lower bands. I'm just very disappointed that Hustler designed the larger coils that way.

Excellent "get it on quick" mobile antenna Time Owned: unknown months.
Have been using Hustler (std. resonators w/ MO-1 mast) for two weeks HF mobile. Very easy to setup, both mechanically and electrically--little tweaking from factory instructions needed, just set the whip length and go. Fold-over feature very handy for changing resonators (my truck doesn't fit in the garage anyways). 40m bandwidth on my install a little narrower than advertised, but that's good (more efficient). With 10/15/20m resonators can easily work 12/17m by using 20m whip in 10/15m resonators--save a coupla bucks. The multi-resonator adapter (I have the triple one) works very well, very little resonator interaction making a good 3-band whip. Mechanically it turns out to be very top-heavy, GUY IT! and you'll be fine. Have worked 50 countries in 14 days on it using IC-735, and busted a few fair-sized pileups too!

Versatile mobile wonderstick Time Owned: unknown months.
This baby rocks. On a trip to Arkansas, my father and I were working 40 meters /QRP. On the road, we worked all over the country, and Cuba! All reports were good. People couldn't believe we were working /M/QRP! At night, we kept the Hustler magnet-mounted to the top of the van, and ran the feed line into the hotel room. What a nice antenna. At my home QTH, I have the Hustler mounted on the end of a 2x4 that I shove out about 5 feet when I'm ready to operate. This is quite a crude antenna set-up, but has allowed me to work the country and an occasional DX with no problems. When I want to change bands, I just pull in the 2x4 and screw a different coil onto the mast. If you are going mobile, or just want to stick something on a 2x4 and hang it off your balcony, then the Huster mast-and-coil setup is the way to go. The 4 magnet mount accessory along with the spring accessory allowed us to hum down the highway at 80 - oops - 70 miles an hour without a problem. I believe in this product 100%. Get one.
