Great fun radio Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Reviewing a cheap portable radio against either good communications receivers or SDR's will always cause consternation especially when a reviewer gives the radio a good score. Obviously, common sense tells you that you cant rate Oranges against Apples but as you have to score the radio, I give it a 4. Why? The radio is well made for the price and its performance is very good. Audio is crisp but lacking any bass depth. The one big issue with this radio is its VERY touchy tuning especially on SW! You need the patience of Job to tune stations. Being an analogue radio, the dial is limited in extent and the SW range from about 4.6MHz to 19.0Mhz is squeezed into one band. That calls for very nimble fingers to tune but stations come in aplenty. FM is very sensitive, in urban areas the user may find the need to collapse the antenna to prevent overload. AM shows very good sensitivity as well, reasonable selectivity. It couples beautifully to a passive loop which lifts the AM considerably. As mentioned SW is also sensitive but difficult to tune. Having said all that, we must realize that the radio is cheap so one cant expect Gold Standard. It is manufactured in Indonesia for the Asian and African market and unfortunately AM only covers to 1610khz but mine does tune to 1630khz. It is a fun radio to "play" with and as such can be recommended to any radio tragic who needs a "fix" in thier collecting endeavors. Worthwhile.
