Not as good as the Original Part Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Tested over 2 years!
The built quality is fine on the earlier GREEN pcb. The Blue one seems to have a much higher noise level and lower quality manufacture with SMT rework and solder touch ups. I don`t have the technical equipment to do tests on these two OEM Third Party units.but the green one seems to have less noise than the blue PCB one... I have tested these in 4 radios. FT857 FT857D FT-817 FT817ND. That`s the first and second generations of these popular Yaesu Radios...I have now decided to remove the OEM units and i`m now using the genuine units intalled in the radios because of constant noise levels generated by the OEM units.I have to say the OEM look good! But they don`t work good!

The radio becomes unusable Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Huge noise generated by the crystal, the radio becames completely unusable, it only receives the loudest signals (over S9). Restoring the original oscillator it returns to its original sensitivity

Lots of Spurs Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
$10/20 version on eBay has a lot of spurious outputs. Maybe this is why the higher N/F in some rigs. Good stability is required of 2M and 70cm but so is a quiet receiver.
I have frequency plots available on request.

Poor receiver sensitivity Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've tested 16 pieces (four different types) of TCXO from Ebay. They have good frequency stability and a nice sine wave. Unfortunately, they have a very high level of phase noise which worsens the sensitivity of the receiver. For example, my old FT-817 with a transistor or original TCXO from Yaesu has a noise figure (NF) of about 5.1 in the 2m band. With Chinese generators NF increases to 8.5 - 9.0.
Nobody writes about it, but the price of Japanese TCXO Yaesu is not accidental ...
I hope that the new FT-818 will be different from the FT-817ND not only the battery, TCXO and TX power, but it will have better technical parameters: less receiver noise and a pure transmitter signal.

Great enhancement! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I do a lot of very narrow band digital stuff with my FT-817ND. On WSPR and various JT modes, it is clear that my frequency is much more stable -- increased decodes on WSPR in particular.

Defect in manufacture - unusable Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I ordered this item and when it arrived it was unusable. One of the pin sockets was full of metal and couldn't accept the pin from the radio. It appears there is a great lack of quality control.

Fantastic bargain Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Paied less than 17$ from China to Italy shipping included.
I was a bit worried not to receive it.
In two weeks It was on my desk. Installed flawlessly.
Much more stable in frequency mostly on 430mhz with CW filter 300hz. You really note the difference.
For many years I looked at that empty socket for TCXO-9, wanting to fill It but unwilling to pay 90$ or so....
Jump on the bargain before the price grows

Fine Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Hi,

This item is not only cheap but also works finely.
I did some tests on WSPR on 144 MHz with a friend whose installation is referenced to a professional GPS better than 1 part for 10 billions. My drift was minimal and out of the box precision was also very good.
Definitely a great buy.

Now even less expensive... Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The competition is on...

The Chinese clone of the Yaesu TCXO-9 which I previously reviewed is now sub-seventeen-dollars on eBay from 2 or 3 sellers, including shipping.

This is six bucks less than I paid for mine back in late September!!! I don't see why anyone wouldn't want one under their Christmas tree this year.

The quality is excellent. There are caveats, as listed in my previous posting, but they're minor.

No, I don't have ANY financial interest in their sales.

Plus, I still feel that my $22 range earlier purchase was fairly priced and a really nice addition to my FT-817 (no ND). The current pricing is an absolute steal !!!

I just wanted to do an update now that the price has dropped by more than 30% over what I paid.
