Great value on the used market Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
The Fluke 87 series I has most of the features of the industry-standard 87 V, and excellent-to-mint condition units can be had on the used market for $100 - $150. This is a terrific (and safe) DMM for electronics as it has a high accuracy mode (20,000 count), as well as microamp capability. Build quality is outstanding and beats most Asian-made meters currently out there (except maybe for Brymen ;-). The couple of drawbacks are a slow refresh speed, relatively small display digits, and a "so-so" backlight. The 87 series III improves on some of these, and is priced a little higher on the surplus market, but is still a great deal as occasional "new, old stock" units come up for sale. The one caveat to the older 87 series Flukes is that there are no more replacement displays readily available, although elastomer contact kits are, which allow one to "recondition" fading or ghosting displays which is a common problem.
