Superb ADF and BCB DX rcvr			Time Owned: more than 12 months.
The ARN-7 was installed on thousands of WW 2 planes and soldiered on into the 1970s before it was completely replaced. It is nearly identical to the Bendix MN 62 ADF which was installed on many 1950s propliners such as the DC 6 and DC 7. It runs on 110 VAC 400 Hz and 28 VDC. These days many cheap 12 VDC -110 VAC 60 Hz inverters can be tweaked to put out 400 Hz AC. The ARN-7 runs OK on square wave AC. The accuracy of this ADF is unsurpassed and if you use a long wire antenna it is a SUPERB BCB DX rcvr. The loop can be rotated to null out interfering stations if they are located at an angle from the one you are trying to copy, but the loop is a compromise for DX, long wire works much better. R-5 ARN-7 receivers, LP 21 "football" loops, and C-4 control boxes are not rare and plugs are still available from Fair radio and others. The post WW 2 ARN 6 is an easier mil surplus ADF to set up as it uses only 28 VDC. It is easy to take the upper limit of this ADF up to at least 4 MHz by modifying the band 4 oscillator coil, so if you want to DF 75 or 80M AM sigs it can be done.
