| FT 991 has surprised me very positively |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
| compared to my TS 850s and TS 990S very good receiver, the operation is no problem. the SSB audio goes well with the org. Yaesu MH 31A8J and the 3 band EQ adjust. Unfortunately, the audio in FM (especially 2m / 70cm) is without pressure and lacks treble and the sound sounds like "can" to. The problem I have eliminated a electret own production (EM 8RJ 45 Yaesu). In SSB the audio setting is now easier and sound even better. FM: Mic Gain about 30%, about 20% SSB. The EQ - Einstelungen can I provide. The microphone can be found on my website. (Www.dg1ogw.de) |

| Good offering in the station in a box category |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I've had a chance to give this radio a good work out over the past few weeks.
The Good: Excellent VHF/UHF performance on a par with the transverters I've used. Very good HF performance. Better than the Icom 706, TS-2000, Yaesu FT-847. Just short of the TS-590.
The Bad: Promises a lot on digital modes but comes up short. Radio has USB cat and Audio codec but I couldn't figure out what Yaesu was doing with the carrier points with digital modes. Lot's of audio artifacts... Provides PTT and FSK shift through a dedicated USB com port. USB FSK Shift uses a nonstandard pin though so it's useless. (Have to use ACC connector) Radio uses two comports (CAT and PTT/Shift). At least it does have FSK.
The Ugly: Poor documentation. Erroneous and omitted information. Digital modes require their own, comprehensive chapter. Had to figure out too much through experimentation/ trial and error. Mini Din connectors for hooking up an amp and audio connections not supplied. Non standard key, headphone and microphone connectors, although I concede that many radios are now deviating from what I consider "standard". |

| A great radio |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I have owned my FT-991 for several weeks now and decided I must add my short review after reading some of the negative comments made by some. Most importantly I have not had any issues at all with the radio despite extensive use since it arrived. My radio is loaded with the latest firmware and I guess the latest firmware has sorted the bugs found in earlier versions. My primary band is 2m where I look for and chase DX. The FT-991 is very good on this band. Its sensitive, selective and copes with strong signals very well. In fact, in my opinion, its one of the best radios for this band available these days. Additionally it was so easy to set up the 991 for WSJT (for FSK441 and JT65 - meteor scatter and EME). It has an inbuilt soundcard so an interface between the radio and PC is not required. I also operate on 6m and HF and the radio performs brilliantly on these bands too. I can recommend the FT-991 to anyone looking for a good, reasonably priced HF to 70cms, multimode, multiband radio.

| Needs a lot of work |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
The radio looks nice out of the box and could be a great radio with a few minor fixes. The Spectral display takes a lot of panel space but only works when the audio is off and is it does not display any usable data such as adjacent stations. Selecting gives one pass on the display. It can not be used to tune to a CW station which is needed and there does not appear to be a way to center the CW signal with a display meter.
The menu function will bring up a selection of three items and one is highlighted. Trying to determine which is highlighted and which one to select is not easy. Probably would be impossible when mobile.
The CAT commands are not provided by Yaesu and so it will not work well as a computer interfaced radio for logging. The Microham interface will not talk to this radio.
This is a VHF radio but to program a repeater offset into memory will require a lot of in depth reading or a program such as RT Systems that can create the data file. This is not the same as CAT commands. RT Systems software does a great job of getting the base radio to work well.
This may be a good choice to VHF/UHF SSB.
I'll wait for the next software revision, but like my FTdx9000, that may never happen.

| Good to see, but not to use... |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
The radio is good, but it could be better, it has some problem that I'm going to list:
1) Sometime the firmware fails, for example it happens that you call the memories and it show you an incorrect frequency for the selected memory, at the end you need to change band or switch off and on the radio to access the correct frequency in memory;
2) Sometime the firmware isn't able to read the correct tuning values (from the 100 memorized values) for the current frequency and you can have infinite swr, then you switch off and on again on the unit and all go well; it does not read the correct value even if you execute the tuning again on the current frequency, during tuning you can see that swr go less, but when you push the mike button in cw-ssb you have again infinite swr;
3) The CAT control via USB crashes if you press the mike button;
4) You can't memorize more than one shift per band, for example in 430Mhz where you can have repeaters with a shift of 1.6Mhz and others with 5 Mhz, you have to remember in mind the shift for every repeater that you put in memory and set it every time you need to use that repeater. This is a very bad thing!!
5) The atu has 100 memories, but I don't see their effects, the ATU is slow, very slow.
6) The atu doens't tune if you have more than 3.1 of swr, bad, very bad, in particulary if you have a long/random wire antenna;
7) It seems that the radio isn't good for a long/random wire antenna system, you need an external antenna tuner (ts-480 works really better);
If you know the radio, you can use it without big problems, but it could be really better. |

I was looking for a radio to dedicate to 6 meters and 2 meter work, and liked the size and shape of the FT991. I was at a hamfest and saw one in person and made a impulse buy, mainly because I had just sold a bunch of equipment and had a pocket full of money.
I'm mainly a CW op on HF, and my main rig is a K3. So I have high standards. I've owned Icom 756Pro, Orion, Ten Tec Eagle, Icom 7000, etc. When I got the radio home and hooked it up on 40 meters I was very pleasantly surprised.
It has a great receiver. I holds its own side-by-side on weak signals with the K3 and there is no comparison to the IC-7000. The DSP filtering is great. I'm sitting here with it cranked down to 50 Hz and there is no ringing or distortioin. I can't do that on the K3. QSK is good, has nice keying characteristics, sounds great, and is simple to operate with the touch-screen interface.
My last Yaesu radio was a FT 897, this is in a whole different class.
Hooking the radio to the computer was simple. I did have to upgrade some of my software to match the latest radio, but that was the only glitch.
So I'm impressed. This is a lot of radio for the money in a very nice small package. I'm happy I made the impulse buy.

| Works For ME |
Time Owned: 3 to 6 months. |
Ive used this rig for 5 months now. Excellent service, used it in the Alberta Mara Field Day as a portable rig tied to a battery and solar panel. Great comments received on audio clarity and strength of signal. Even at lower input voltage, the power output was so much better then with my ICOM-7000. Easy to use , TFC display is great. Certainly my best and most versatile rig. I see complaints on the AM side from some of the users. I don't use the AM mode so its not a biggy with me. Would I do it again?..... Yuper

| Very good! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
| I purchased my radio a few weeks ago now , I've had some time to play with it and the CW functions are fantastic (too many to list here) the SSB gang will love the reports on how good they sound on air, even with the stock mic, the High Speed Spectrum Scope is a nice touch, and the 3.5" TFT Touch Panel is a pleasure to use. As for VHF/UHF, it does itself proud, I can hear FM repeaters I couldn't hear on the FT897d! And as for pager break-through, I get none!! When I had my Icom IC7100 I got S9 plus on VHF with a PAR UK pager filter in line! I used the RT Systems software to program the radio, but found it was limited! All though it's early days yet, first impression is it could be a winner, only time will tell if it's a good successor to the FT897d though. |
