A sensitive and well built receiver . Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I have two of these sets. One is only the radio with no cabinet. The other is a complete unit with vibrator power supply. The marking on one are in cyrillic and on the other in German. Both required power supplies to provide the necessary voltages. Filaments of the 8 2J27L are 2.5 v and plate voltage is 80-90 vdc. Junkbox provided most of the parts needed. To operate the vibrator power supply a 2.5 vdc source capable of delivering at least 2 amps is needed. The front panel controls are simple with a gain control labelled loudness and an IF bandwidth control. There is a frequency calibrator and antenna tuner. The meter just registers filament and plate voltages. The antenna connector is designed for a pole or long wire and is non standard. A common mod is to find a standard connector. Two pole phone and line connectors are available in the front panel. All power connectors are also in the front. The bandswitch moves a cylinder type mechanism that reminds me of the SP600JX. A round glass window shows the band jn big numbers and there is also a band indicator in the main dial. Overall appearance is nice and makes for a very interesting set.
The operation is simple with the gain control. SSB is possible with the BFO. Sensitivity is excellent but audio requires a matching 600 to 8 ohm transformer and a good speaker. I
Went through 4 speakers before finding one that gave me a good response. These receivers are well known for their durability. The manuals are in Cyrillic so they are difficult. Schematics are available and repairs if any are easy. Tubes are also available. The 2J27L is a glass tube with a metal envelope and a screw on extraction knob. Availabilith of the R311 varies but it is mainly available in Europe and Russia. Apparently it was used for common military traffic such as weather etc. It is a nice Boatanchor.
