Hard to restore, has issues Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This is a tough review to write because I like older
receivers like the SX-28 and SX-28A. Lets do the pros
first. Great styling, especially in its original cabinet.
Front panels usually in good condition (excellent paint).
These have the Lamb type noise limiter which works
very well. Excellent audio quality and plenty of power.
Good sensitivity.

Now the bad points. This is a VERY difficult receiver to
restore properly. Parts buried under other parts and
switches. And many parts will need to be replaced
including all electrolytics, wax caps and many resistors.
I've restored an SX-28 and most recently and SX-28A.
The chassis is very prone to rust. The one performance
issue that annoys me the most is the VFO will change
frequency when adjusting controls like RF Gain.

There are much better 'high performance SW'
receivers of the period out there. Anything Collins, SP-600, AR-88 and others. But if you like a challange,
are experienced in restoring tube gear and want a great
looking receiver, this might be a good one for you.

Prettiest boatch anchor ever. Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
This is not the best on the planet receiver but is the most nice of the boat anchor era. It is a capable receiver up to 20 mhz with stock preamps, oscillator and mixer tubes, more than that you need an extra preamp. EXCELLENT AM BCB RECEIVER , with a lot of sensitivity on that lower band and also a lot of Q using the antenna trimmer cap.

Audio reproduction has very good bass and nice voice articulation. Not very stable on SSB but on AM is more than enough. Sharp crystal selectivity position has 5 khz band width. Lamp noise limiter works EXCELLENT. Ergonomics are very good. Main and band sread tuning knobs have no back lash.

Performance is versus an IC 7800.

Yes it is not an R 390A or SP-600 but any one that could see a restored ONE , says WOWs... even little childs.
