Talk about Flexibility Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Ron at Scorpion Antennas (Arizona) builds beautiful stainless steel "motorized" dipoles of the highest quality. From presales, installation and well after install; Ron continued to go above and beyond and out of his way to help me get the most out of the antenna. From hanging it in my attic, to lowering (in the attic) to finally relocating it outside to get the most of it's design/engineering. I don't know how he balances the manufacturing all day and then returning calls even on Saturday evenings to regularly brainstorm potential mounting options. There are many that just install it on a tripod and they're good to go. On every band (80 thru 10 meters), I can get either 1.1 or 1.2 SWR (According to Amplifier). and they'll support the legal limit. PS He also ships you an remote in case you want to go remote and take one of the horizontal tubes and turn it in a stand alone mobile / remote screwdriver. Even though I have it mounted on a Yaesu G800DXA rotor, it only needs to be turned, 90 degrees to send your signal a full 360 to cover the planet. There are plenty of satisfied customers and I can count myself as one of many. 73's

Ultimate equipment quality, professionalism, and support. Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Ultimate equipment quality, professionalism, and support. It’s expensive… It’s absolutely worth it. A true investment.

LET’S GET THIS OUT OF THE WAY:: There are two main components in every Scorpion Antenna product…

1: The precision antenna system itself

… And…

2. The unmatched knowledge and “lighthouse" product support of it’s craftsman, Mr. Ron Douglass.

First off, I am a big fan of home-brew radiators and "wires in trees". However, when your HOA keeps you from the most simplest of lofted 14AWG… you begin to search for an all in one solution in a compact and mobile footprint. Of course there are a myriad of options from the portable market or even home-brewed resources… each with their slew of trade-offs and compromises… especially in the areas of quality, convenience and durability metrics. For example, one thing I’ve come to dread, home QTH systems that constantly require you to physically trim and tune the whip lengths for band changes. I knew that if I had to have a compact, no radials, HOA compliant, mobile system… that would keep me transmitting rather than manually trim/tuning on the patio for band changes… what would that system look like?

Well, things looked grim… I tried several of the **Pole systems, or **Loop systems… all had solid qualities and expected performances, only to be undermined by, “at the antenna tuning” requirements and “poor IP/ weather UV protection”. I desperately wanted the flexibility of “from the shack" tuning and the proven IP weatherproofing construction of a beam or wire.

Enter Ron Douglass and his Scorpion product line.

The Scorpion Dipole is a precision tool, clad in bombproof armor. There are NO WORDS that can relate the quality and craftsmanship that Ron puts into this product. The Scorpion Dipole is designed to not only out-perform but to last… and it should since Ron applies a LIFETIME warranty to each of his antenna systems. Every checkbox is checked… it’s LAB QUALITY ART in a milled battleship barrel.

My current QTH is on a small hillside, tucked in low with a small solid angle of open sky to the northeast. With wire, I could sometimes skip to the east coast, Canada and Mexico… however, most of the time, I warmed clouds and relied on a donut of one skip, NVIS like performance. I knew I could do better. I tried the **Poles and **Loops… and was met with S7 noise/ coupling issues to the QTH structure. I needed something more… something that wasn’t designed for a backpack or a beach... something that would last that I didn't have to tune on the patio every 30 min. So I emailed Ron.

Ron, every step of the way was pragmatic and honest about deploying a Scorpion Dipole in my situation… many potential hurdles were discussed at length, both over the phone and in email. In the end… even if the Scorpion matched a **Pole product line or home-brew dipole, but allowed me to tune from the shack, it seemed like a worthy shot. After multiple phone calls and emails with Ron, I poured 3 fingers of Talisker and made the purchase. I am so glad I did.

Again, this is no foreign-part-sourced, sorta plastic extrusion with second hand MFJ whips… this is a handcrafted, milled and fitted tool. It takes time to custom fit the components to Ron’s specifications… this is NOT Amazon Prime. However, when it arrives… it’s like getting tank barrels in the mail… UPS WILL HATE YOU. The care taken in packing each assembly matches the product… it’s as if he is sending the antenna to Pluto. It will arrive as he sent it… calibrated.

Ron was with me each step of the way… from his first informational call to me, past dozens of emails, to the actual purchase…through assembly and finally delivery… Ron called or emailed updates and suggestions. And his commitment to me didn’t stop there. Once I had the system, Ron was there for every question I generated… calling proactively to check on assembly. I had a target to have the system up and running by Field Day 2018. Ron made sure I was ready. Ron augmented his support with diagrams, images of prior customer deployments and best practices. Ron even caught a wiring mistake, I made, via casual email. Ron is unmatched in quality control and customer support. Ron’s soul is in these antennas.

The first hour the system was live, I was S3 on 20m and I was pulling in Bologna, Italy… and I made my first contact at 100w SSB Phone to Hawaii, Alaska and Brazil… seamlessly driving between bands from the shack. And now that I have set the StepperTune ATU to each of my desired sub-bands… I can drive from 10m to 80m before most people can turn their beams 90degrees. It was my best Field Day ever.

Ron and his Scorpion Dipole are a huge success for my QTH and mentality. Ron crafted a lab quality product with a lifetime warranty, which includes support, to my needs and made sure it hit the target. I now have an antenna system that is mobile, works as my primary QTH rig that I trust implicitly… Essentially, Ron and this antenna have revitalized this hobby for me.

Call Ron… you will never be disappointed. Both he and his products exceed all metrics. Second to none.

An engineering and machining masterpiece Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
First off, let me say that I never had any experience with screwdriver antennas used back to back as a dipole. I had only wished for many years that I could get one, and use it for portable outings or on vacation. Or perhaps, when the time comes to downsize, (read as moving to a condo) that this unit would still keep me on the air. Well, meet Ron Douglass at Scorpion antennas and his uncanny ability to produce a product that is truly second to none, as far as machining and materials that go into the unit itself. And if you think you have a problem, well, Ron has already thought about the same problem and has a fix for it, before you can even send him an email. After my initial order, Ron kept me updated as to where my order was, and when my unit would be built. You see, Ron also has a full time job, to pay the bills, but he also finds time everyday to answer emails, or even call you on the phone. I cannot say enough about his customer service abilities, and his desire to make sure that you are totally satisfied with your purchase. As someone else wrote about one of his mobile antennas: "Quality is remembered long after price is forgotten." Can you name another antenna manufacturer that will give you a lifetime warranty? After my initial hook up, my first contact was Columbia. Not bad for something I had no experience with. Seriously folks, even if you are just thinking about Scorpion Antennas, give them a real close look. You will be glad you did, I know I am.
