Good substitution for expensive OEM Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I was looking for an external speaker for my new Icom 775. I think that original speakers from Icom, Yaesu and Kenwood are not worth the money (I have Yaesu SP-8, use it with FT-1000MP, but can
not understand, why RadioShack type of gizmo costs that much. I ended up buying set of Cambridge Soundworks home theater speakers (5 pieces plus a bonus subwoofer - all for $150) -- so now I have enough speakers for all my radios in all 3 QTHs. The small 4"x4"x4" boxes have internal cirquit to flatten the high frequency response. For ham radio, I needed just the opposite -- to reduce high frequency output over 3 KHz to get rid of DSP hiss. The two capacitors and an inductor found inside the speaker box make a great simple band pass filter with cutoff frequencies around 300 Hz and 2.8 Khz -- exactly what doctor ordered. The "improved" speaker sounds better than bigger SP-8.
If you do not need 5 speakers, you can buy one for $40 -- still a bargain.
