Take it beyond Extra Class Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I own a pretty extensive library of RF engineering books as this is my profession as well as my hobby. I have had a copy of Newnes Radio and RF Engineering Pocket Book; Edition 3 for about two years now and only infrequently used it as a reference. Today while looking up for details on a test procedure for equipment certification I spent more time going through the book and was very pleasantly surprised. It is put together very well with the topics clearly covered and in a manner that would not put many folks who are amateur radio operators to sleep with the heavy mathematics that is behind the hobby.

Most of the sections have direct applicability to the amateur radio hobby and it does an excellent job of explaining propagation, antenna theory, modulation, coaxial cables and the different types of batteries. It even jumps right in with drawings on how to prep and install coax connectors!

Practically everything covered ends up appearing on the US amateur radio Extra class examination.

If you are looking at a deeper understanding of radio and RF this can be an excellent way to get a different perspective that would complement your skills. You can take it beyond just memorizing answers to pass a test, this builds real skills.
