I took a chance on a new motorcycle battery for a 1983 Honda CB650sc. That breed was well known for only charging at higher engine speeds and required constant 'trickling" when not in use. Enter a battery at about 1/4 the weight of a lead acid with the CCA (cold cranking amps) exceeding the heavier 12v 6 wet cell equivalents. So why use Scorpion Stinger batteries for ham radio? Because they have a built-in onboard controller. Chargers for lithium iron po4's are different but with the controller direct substitution in auto and utility, motorcycles, etc is possible. The best deal appeared to be the SST51913-fp for the largest motorcycles at 525 CCA which probably translates to 70Ah (maybe). A pair of these could run a 100w transceiver all day at 7 lbs of battery weight. Never leave these batteries discharged but if properly maintained they claim 2000 cycles which should beat the life of a few lead acids. These batteries supposedly start cars just fine.
