affordable compact portable/mobile tuner that tunes 160M too ! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Alinco released the EDX-1 manual tuner with the DX-70T/TH hf transceiver back in around 1995. Surprised it's taken 20+ years for it's first review....

Physically it matches the DX70T/TH radio in both case/chassis/knob size and appearance.

It's not a very common accessory, but available if you look. When you do run across one, grab it because it's a real gem.

It's a well constructed tuner that tunes 160-10 meters. It does not have a built in balun for random wire/ladder line, but is ideal for most coaxial fed antennas such as dipoles, mobile whips, G5RV etc. Compact size makes it ideal for mobile/portable/field operation. The matching size to the Alinco radio makes it perfect for a grab-n-go type kit.

The knobs are big and brawny, making it easy to operate. Set the band switch (for inductance) and then rotate the two controls to minimize reflected power. The thing tunes a wide range of antennas... 16.5-150 ohms tuning range and rated at 150W of power, more than enough headroom for full power out of most of today's HF portable/small HF radio's.

Built in meter is a little small size-wise, but does not require calibration and reads forward and reflected power with a push button switch - it is accurate and functional for VSWR at the 100W level.

Tuner has 1 inductance setting per band including WARC bands, and operates as a Pi-Network with an adjustable capacitor on the transmitter and antenna sides. The inductance is achieved by a series of wire wound torroid and larger tank coil for the lower bands.

Thru-setting allows the tuner to be bypassed (although meter still functions) without disconnecting it when running a fully resonant antenna.

Note: this tuner does require 13.8V to operate both the meter light and a set of 4 relays for lower band inductance switching (which keeps RF off the main band switch for higher reliability). Includes a short power cable that plugs into DX-70/DX-77 socket for easy powering..or can use wall-wart or just run a wire to your station power supply.

Used price is usually around $150 and the build quality is obviously high. Tuner is made in Japan.
