| Doesn't hold time |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
| I've had this 3 days already. Great rig, but doesn't hold the date or time. Been on the rig 5 times already and have had to set the date and time everytime. I have a ts-890, ft-991a and both of them hold the date and time. They are over 2 years old. What's the deal Icom? Thought this was a good rig. But I guess not. Ready to send it back. |

| Best value in an HF+6m rig |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
Well, time for another update after another 2+ years of service:
The Yaesu hybrid RF analogue/SDR design appears to have won the hearts and minds of astute amateurs (and the test equipment at Sherwood Labs)—but the Icom IC-7300 still sits atop my operating desk and likely will continue to be there for the foreseeable future.
Currently priced a few hundred dollars less than Yaesu’s highly rated FTdx-10, it remains an absolute bargain.
I do not live in an RF noisy environment, and my modest antennas are not prone to overload the radio in normal operation—even during contests.
During a very recent ARRL SSB DX contest (where 10m was wide open, Yahoo!) I was easily able to hear and work S-0 to S-1 signals surrounded by S-9+ stations. The digital filters are amazing, and judicious use of the RF gain seems to eliminate any of the “overload problems” some have experienced and written about.
I’ve found the radio to be similarly effective, and a joy to use, on CW.
I often contemplate upgrading to a “better” rig, but when I ask myself if one of those rigs would help me or enrich my operating experience in any way the answer is always, no.
I’ve owned a lot of radios over the years, some of them top of the line. I’m definitely not new to this.
In my opinion, this is still an incredible radio and still a Best Buy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update after nearly two years of use: The longer I’ve had it, the more I use it, the better I like it.
Now that I have it paired with a new amp (Acom 1010), I find that it gets more use than my FT-1000MP. It took awhile for me to move in that direction.
I bought the Icom primarily for the simplicity of physical setup for digital modes (one USB cable) but I knew from reading reviews and specs that this was an extraordinarily capable all around radio. Personally, I now find digital modes boring. I’m no longer doing any digital. The fun was in getting it setup and making it work. Actual operating in a digital mode just doesn’t do it for me. I know others enjoy it very much.
Now, the 7300 has become my go-to rig for phone and CW.
I did a lot of research before buying it. And, along with many other hams, I believe the 7300 to be the best value, by far, in an HF+6m rig currently on the market.
You’d have to spend far more before finding a significantly more capable radio.
Mine has operated flawlessly since day one, working capably as a CW rig and also receiving excellent (sometimes astonished) audio reports with the supplied hand mic on SSB. Recently, I replaced the hand mic with a Heil iCM mic on a boom for convenience. It, too, gets excellent audio reports.
| Good radio, performs well. |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
Mine is coming up on a year.
I do little CW and when I do the Tentecs I have are better at it.
For SSB I have several radios to compare to and its RX is good audio and for TX its top of the pile.
Most of the people complaining on RX audio have likely not used a direct SDR. Simply said when they overload it over, reduce gain or add attenuator and it cleans up. That said, to compare with Tentec Triton iV, and Eagle as receivers the 7300 wins
so long as you do not overload it. More than a few contests to try it on and it does well. You don't run it like old school tube or multi-conversion rigs.
The touch screen once familiar is really easy to make changes on the fly along with an abundance of buttons to get to the critical controls. I find it a comfortable radio to drive.
TX, even with the stock hand mic outstanding. Adjustments are easy and work well and the TX monitor with headphones is helpful. If you one to diddle audio for days to get to "right" this will frustrate you, you want more "knobs" not functionality.
For data, rtty and other digital modes its easy to use and
operate.
Like many the ATU is very limited and quits above 3:1 and that's not always handy. For my antennas not an issue but some use just any old wire and expect the tuner to clean it up.
Fan is fairly quiet but its wired to run on tx and acceptable as I have other radios that have heavy (boat anchor) heatsink chassis (TS440S/AT) or have fans that are thermally triggered. For a compact radio a fan is a must.
I do wish PowerPoles were the default connector not the molex or whatever that is.
The accessory connector is a royal pain being both small and tough to find.
For a 1100$ radio best bang for the buck.
| Exceptional radio! |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
I have had an Icom 7300 for my Remote station for many years and just traded a brand new competitors radio for another 7300. Right out of the box the 7300 sounds very good on receive and transmit. (I have never even touched the EQ settings). My favored bandwidths are SSB, 2.7, 2.4, 1.8kHz: For CW, 700, 200, and 50Hz. AM, 10, 6, and 3kHz. Yes the 50 on CW is narrow but sometimes in a contest environment, it IS my filter of choice. Look at Sherwood receiver specs: 106dB @ 20kHz and 97dB @ 2kHz RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX. Unless you have a 100' tower and a beam, pretty much this is the radio of choice. (Have a 100' tower and a beam? - get a K3 with 8-pole filters!). Customer support? I called today and talked to a live Tech. Problem solved on the phone. Oh for remote or FT-8? , one USB cable for audio AND control. No extra boxes to buy. Pretty simple.
What else can I say. The IC-7300 is a 10 in my book. Thank you Icom. de KG9H
| I like it |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I hesitated to buy this radio because of the many reviews that said it had poor audio. So I was leaning toward getting the Kenwood TS-590sg.
But the TCXO on the TS-590sg not only costs extra, but you have to install it yourself! To heck with that. So I bought the 7300.
Oh, but the audio was indeed crappy! I played around with parameters and that improved it some. After a couple more weeks experimenting with the settings, the audio now sounds decent. It's about 80% toward approaching what a Kenwood would sound like, and that's good enough for me.
Though the 590sg would be a little better with receive audio, I'm glad I didn't get it. I can't imagine doing without the great Icom display and the convenience of a touch screen.
The 7300 has many great features, too many to list. It's a fantastic radio. The only weakness is with the receive audio, but with the right adjustments, it can sound much, much better than what you hear with the default settings.
| Getting Old |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
The Yaesu 710 SDR radio will now push Icom to get the updated 7300 model in the works soon....
The Icom 7300 was a fantastic radio for its time....
The receiver is the weak link in my opinion... |
| Just purchased Coming from Flex 6400 |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I have a couple Flex rigs. I have a 6300 and a 6400 and I do think they have a little better receivers but not much. I wanted a rig I could have on my desk and I could keep any eye on or listen to while I work on the computer.
I have only been playing with it for a couple hours and so far I like it, I really missed tuning the dial and what I paid for this New is less than Flex wants for their remote head thing. I am not a computer expert just a user that knows enough to get thigs to go. It seemed every time I would think to turn the Flex on there would be some little thing that screwed with me. It loves to think someone is already using it and I have to fight to be able to use the rig.
I have only make a couple contacts, will have to wait until my friend is available to see how the transmit audio sounds.
I have been a ham for 40 years now and all I san saw is WOW look at all we get for less than what we used to pay. I remember after U upgraded from Novice to General I treated my self and purchased a bran new Icom 735 and it was a good rig but nothing like this and I paid 1000$ for it a LONG time ago I only paid 1350 for this I think and I have a 100$ rebate coming from Icom I think. |
| The Audio quality lets it down. |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
I had the 7300 a few years and only for getting the Yaesu FT-891 I never would have realised how bad the audio is from the 7300. I always listen with headphones and I can comfortably listen to the 891 for hrs but the harsh audio and background noise from the 7300 wrecks my head even with NR on all the time, with the 891 I hardly need DNR at all as it has such a low noise floor and good analogue audio. If the 7300 had proper AGC control like on SDR Console it would make a big difference.
Now I have the Yaesu FTDX-10 and it's a much better radio, far better receiver, filters and Audio quality, it's a really sweet radio to listen to and for SWL, the 7300 cut a lot of the lows from the audio that even the EQ can't make up for, the FTDX-10 sounds really good on AM broadcast stations.
The 7300 is a decent radio for anyone doing mostly digi modes but the Audio quality lets it down badly on AM broadcast and SSB and with the Yaesu FT-710 available now I really feel yaesu understand that the screen isn't the most important part of a radio and that audio quality matters a lot.
I think Yaesu have nailed it when it comes to audio quality, a screen and waterfall can't make up for poor audio and it seems to be something Icom have neglected on the 7300. |
| Great rig |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
I'd be hard pressed to have anything bad to say about this little rig.
I don't think I've ever heard a bad one on the air.
I installed the PTRX and the quiet fan,and it's my backup rig just behind my 7700.
It's that good !!! |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
| I bought my IC-7300 when I got my license in 2017. It has provided all I needed as a new, 70+ year old, ham. I run SSB, WSJT-X, and other digital modes. I’ve used it for POTA when RVing. It does everything well. |
