EXCELLENT BUT WITH A WARNING Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I purchased the original FT-991 in 2015 and the updated FT-991A in 2018. Both have been used extensively indoors and outdoors with a variety of antennas, on various modes, under a variety of conditions, and for different purposes. They more than meet their design goals.

Nearly all negative reviews fall into three categories: (1) unfamiliarity with how performance can be optimized; (2) expecting features and capabilities of more expensive and physically larger radios; and (3) comparisons with radios not in their category.

However, as noted in forums and online videos, both the FT-991 and FT-991A are vulnerable to the loss of the Attenuator and IPO functions when exposed to RF from other transmitters operating in the near-field. ATT and IPO play important roles in noise mitigation and their loss reduces the receiver's effectiveness. This vulnerability makes them ill-suited for multi-transmitter Field Day and Special Event work unless precautions are taken such as band-pass filtering and significant antenna-separation. When thus protected, however, there is no impediment to enjoyable field experiences using these radios.

Great for FT8 , Casual SSB and Repeaters Time Owned: more than 12 months.
FT8 requires no dsp or filtering in a rig at all. That seems to say that sensitivity is the main rx requirement for the mode. I was surprised to see that this rig is at the very top of Sherwood's list when sorted by sensitivity.

The seemingly overwhelming use of the menus is greatly simplified by assigning actions used frequently to buttons on the bottom of the screen.

I got the rig for the "shack in a box" idea which I really don't care for after all but it works fine on my local repeaters and fine for POTA hunting with FT8 so I can't fault it for much. The DSP is just about useless for SSB, there's that, and the contour filtering is just so... forgetaboutit, I'd rather have an adjustable window on the touch screen for hi/low cutoff and button to select notch/gain that could be adjusted on the fly. The contour requires a dive into the menu and trial and error with no adjustment on the fly available. I don't use it at all. I'm not a dx'er or contester so I'm happy to use the width controls that are easily reachable via the touchscreen. The rig is a power hog and not at all suitable for activating parks if you have to hike with a battery. It takes a bit of getting used to but I'm completely satisfied with it.

The hardware is great, the operation/useability is a nightmare. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
There are so many nice reviews about this radio -
maybe it is just me being old and stupid.

At first I thought "uuh - this is a bit special", after a week things got annoying and after a month I just hate it.

Just some examples:

- To adjust the squech you first have to assign "SQL" to the multi function knob.

- It has a DSP and does FFT but is not able to scan for a CTSS tone (something even the 20 year old FT897 could do).

- It has only 100 (!) memories.

- Just touching the VFO knob can change the soft key function assignements.

- First hit on a softkey CH-Dial selects the function the 2nd hit changes the frequency step settings. So before hitting the button you have to check whether it was not already selected/hit earlier.

This just does not make sense.

The designer was certainly not a HAM.

I deeply regret buying this radio :-(
Next thing it gets replaced.

EXCELLENT RADIO Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Excellent radio, I just need help from forum friends, because when I put it in RTTY(L) mode to operate in FSK and I configure it in menu number 96 for the RTS option, the radio starts transmitting (continuous carrier) and I can't operate in FSK (RTTY).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The program used to operate in RTTY FSK is N1MM + MMTTY
PS I have FTDX 101 D and it works perfectly in FSK mode

Excellent radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Excellent radio
I was pleasantly surprised, if set correctly it has excellent above average performance. It can be successfully compared even with more expensive models of all brands . I recommend updating the firmware to the latest version 2024

Great all around radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Best radio I have been around. I would have given up my ham stuff without it due to hearing issues. This one I can hear.

Excellent For me!! Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
This "shack in a box" is perfect for my compact ham installation. Good unit to learn and grow. Love Yaesu equipment!

Excellent for me Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have had this radio for several years (funny how time flies). Its given me no problems which is a plus. I'm a slow learner and am still making little discoveries every now and then. I'm no genius when it comes to radio so I keep the manual right next to the rig because I forget things pretty quickly. I like the size, I like the all-mode all-band concept. The scope is a bit small, and it may not compare to some rigs in some features, but everything in this world tends to be a compromise.

I Love Mine Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have had this transceiver since August of 2021. The audio quality is fantastic when I use not one, but two Yaesu SP-6 Speakers or my Bose Air Buds on all modes.

Not very good at all...sold it after 4 months Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Two and a half years ago....Worst FM receive audio I have ever heard coming out of any radio...and it is not adjustable. An external speaker with 600 c/s base cut helps but it still sounds bad. Spectrum scope is a waste of time and doesn't register signals below an S6. SWR meter is very inaccurate...Apart from that it is OK ....Now bought two good TS2000 no problems much nicer radios ...Jan 2024..Just ordered a new one...fell out with the three ts2000s....not expecting much of the 991r this time around...OMG this radio still sounds so bad....even with the receive ssb/am bass cut in place...fm is still disgusting....up for sale again
