With Modification - Sounds Good! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I decided to purchase the SP-10 because I needed a speaker for my FT-991A. I also wanted something that matched the rig. The cabinet is nice and looks great beside the FT-991A. I assumed I would need to modify or replace the speaker element to another the since other posts indicated the sound was so poor. (I can confirm that the speaker sounded poor out of the box. Somewhat muffled and very poor high frequency response for voice / communication audio.) After using the SP-10 for a few days I decided to dis-assemble the cabinet. Upon dis-assembly, I was shocked to find the speaker shunted with a 47uF capacitor located across the RCA receptacle inside the rear of the cabinet! I removed one of the capacitor leads and was surprised how much better the speaker sounds. Now voice frequencies are clearer, not rolled off and more volume! I don't understand why Yaesu would have included the Cap in the circuit to begin with! Overall, it now sounds decent. K8KSW

Speaker sounds rough! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The cabinet matches the FT-991A great but the sound is rough to say the least. A transistor radio almost sounds better. It doesn't sound too bad on C4FM mode but that's about it. Expensive cabinet for a two dollar speaker! Im glad I bought it used and didn't pay full retail on it. I just ordered a speaker off of ebay to replace the speaker. The sound has to be better than what's in there. I guess ill see when I tear it apart to replace it. Buyer beware!
Update 2/5/2020 I took the speaker apart and found it came lose from the front bracket. It must of broke lose during shipping. Re-expoxied to the mounting plate. Same as the factory had done it. I had bought another speaker to replace the one that was in it. What are the odds of buying the exact same speaker? It sounds a lot better than it did.

Needs work Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
On looks alone, this comms speaker is great, matches the FT-991 & 991A perfectly, even in the audio department! (which is not good)
The speaker Yaesu fit is a cheap rubbish piece of crap.
I have seen mods involving a peerless speaker but that's too expensive, so found one on Amazon, DAYTONAUDIO Dayton Audio CE Series CE65W-8 2-1/2" Shielded Extended Range Driver 8 Ohms @ £8.99. weighs more than the whole SP-10. Fits easily using only two of the screws and some hot melt glue to properly seal the speaker in place. Now it sounds really good, clear and well rounded. As its a sealed unit I might fill the void with pillow stuffing (BAF), I will edit this review if it makes a difference.

Need help Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Before buying this speaker, I was already aware that it would need some TLC to sound acceptable.
I bought a used one and went shopping for a replacement speaker. The Pearless one described in other reviews was not available anymore so I found a replacement woofer on Amazon (Nobsound 1PC 2.5" inch Hi-Fi Desktop Full-Range Speaker High Sensitivity Speaker (8ohm)). This is almost an exact replacement. You dont need to enlarge the hole. I also added some padding in the case.
Now, it sound great with minimal distorsion.
I have way more bass than the stock speaker.
BTW, it match very well with my FT-450D.

Good lookin with the rig Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Too Bad, I suppose, there are way too many critics out there.
Justified or not, I like the box, as far as I am concerned it sounds ok.
It was not intended to be a concert speaker, however I will look at the upgrade mentioned below.
Thanks

Looks nice, matches the 991/a perfectly Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Lovely looking speaker and matches the 991/a very nicely but thats about all.

Sound quality is no better than the standard paper speaker in the rig.

Its a pity, and shame on Yaesu, as for the premium price you pay its very poor quality when it comes to audio.

I have upgraded the speaker to the Peerless by Tymphany PLS-P830984 2-1/2" Full Range Woofer as recommended by N0USR further down the page and its a huge improvement. Will do the BHI DSP mod soon!

Nice cabinet Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
The only good thing about this speaker is the cabinet as others have remarked. The internal speaker reminds me of the early Japanese transistor radios. I have fitted a VISATON FRS 7w 2.5 inch full range speaker in my cabinet. It sounds very good to my ears. I have put the 47uf bipolar capacitor connected across the phono input socket on a switch at the rear panel. It sounds better without it on FM. The Visaton speaker is available in the UK for around £14.
You will need to drill some new holes in the speaker mounting. I just used two screws in opposite corners. The mounting plate on the new speaker has a foam gasket. I then went around with my glue gun. I also used audio wadding to fill the cabinet void. There is no soign of vibration or buzzing.

Way Overpriced Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Only positive thing I can say about this speaker is how well it looks along side my FT-991A. That's it.

At $149.95 it's way overpriced! Performance is very poor. It sounds terrible. I wouldn't waste your money on it. I was so unhappy with how it sounded I replaced the speaker with a Peerless 830984 2-1/2" Full Range Woofer as recommended below. It sounds much better now! I can't believe YAESU would sell such a dud???? You can get a nice pair of Bose powered speakers for half the price of this one.

Cosmetically Nice !! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
If you are after a speaker that cosmetically matches your FT-991(A) you can't get a better match - However, do not expect the speaker to provide any better sound than that which comes out of the FT-991 - With a such high price tag (here in the UK) my suggestion is don't waste your money.

Not Great Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I found that for the high cost of this speaker, the sound was not that good. I used with a FT-991A. The sound was "raspy" and sort of "buzzy". I took N0USR advice and purchased the Peerless 830984 2.5" speaker as a replacement. WARNING: this speaker does not directly fit, you will need to do some machine and trimming! I also put in some foam inside the speaker. It does sound better now. I also had to widen up the receive setting on the Ft-991A to at least 2.8 KHz so it sounds less tinny.
