Very good performance and inexpensive Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This AM FM radio performs very well in both the AM and FM bands. It employees the modern 'DSP" based technology which is it's key to its good performance. On any small radio the tuning is touchy since the entire band is compressed in a small slide rule dial. I can easily pick up all of the local AM stations during the day .. including a few that other, more expensive radios cannot. The AM sensitivity then is very good and is matched by very good selectivity .. meaning you can separately tune in stations only 10 khz or so apart. At night the AM band comes alive with dozens of radio stations that may be tuned. DSP based radios will often auto-mute or auto reduce the volume of the weaker AM stations .. resulting the need to turn up the volume. This one does this muting to some extent not nearly as much as other radios that I have tried. FM performance is similarly good in both respects. The audio through the speaker is clear and loud for such a small radio. It is not stereo on FM but when you plug in stereo headphones / earbuds you will hear the output in both ears. This radio is a little large for a typical shirt pocket. I have the Sony ICF-S10MK2, which is well regarded. This Radio Shack performs at least as well and has a few better features. If you are looking for a small and inexpensive AM FM radio, I recommend that you get one while you can. Mine was only about $13!
