Installed speaker upgrade and acoustic upgrade in the Icom SP-34 and the installation couldn't have been any easier, it fit like a glove. very happy with product.

PHITS TT07 for TenTec SP-307 speaker Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I operate mostly CW. As I tune across the cw band, I was getting internal vibrations/distortion through my Ten Tec SP-307 speaker, varying with the CW tones. This was mostly with the strongest CW signals. I ended up turning the volume down to correct it. I started looking for other speakers, like a sound sweet (not made anymore). However, I like my matching speaker with my Ten Tec radio. I ran across the PHITS "kits" by Phonema that are cut to specific speakers. After installing, I was surprised at the weight; very hefty. The panals fit perfect inside my speaker. Taking my time, it took about 30 mins to install. Once I had everything hooked back up, I was shocked at the difference this upgrade made!! The audio is smooth and jumps out more now. No further vibration even turning the volume very high. I can tell the sound is much more forward now. I tuned into the audiophile frequencies with the same results of beautiful sounding audio now coming from my radio! AM broadcasts are so smooth. The speaker itself is much heavier. The only downside to the Phoneme upgrade is the price. But the results make it less painful. The bottom line is my speaker search is now over.

Yaesu sp 2000 Upgrade Kit Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
While pricey for what it is, it is very well made and goes together as instructed. Using a putty knife when inserting the foam pieces next to each other helps slide them in place. Take your time when taking the cabinet apart so you don't scratch it and cover the top of the workbench with a towel. Be careful lining up screw holes during reassembly of the front panel.
The speaker sound is now solid sounding and has lost the hollow sound it had before. I am glad I purchased it.

Definitely worthwhile Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Had given up on the original IC23 as inferior to the transceiver internal speaker. Then added the Phonema replacement speaker, and separately, the acoustic upgrade. Presto! See my review under the IC23 category.

Speaker GPH-I34 for Icom sp20 Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have owned the icom sp20 speaker for many years now and I have never really enjoyed the audio sound. I finally decided to purchased the replacement speaker for it and when I put it in the audio was a much nicer quality sound. The audio sounds fuller from the low end to the high end. I can understand the voices better. This speaker is not going to get rid of noise on your receive signals, it is going to give you a better audio response. I do have the approximately 2/3's of foam rubber inside the speaker case but left an open space behind the speaker. I am now thinking of purchasing the foam kit to replace the foam rubber I have inside the case. I have to say I am not sorry I purchased this replacement speaker for the icom sp20.

Phits Phonema Y2K Modification Kit Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Bought this kit to use with my Yaesu SP-2000 speaker. Well worth the money and made the speaker sound so much better. It significantly enriched the front panel filters on the speaker as well.

Other than getting the speaker case apart, which required a lot of patience and fanagling, the installation of the foam itself is pretty straightforward.

I was lucky in that I did not need to use any tools to pry apart the speaker case and damage my speaker, however I highly suggest you be prepared to spend some time carefully taking the speaker case apart.

However, once you make the installation, it will be well worth the effort.

I'm not sure it's worth the money Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
So i bought the Phonema GAMMA PHITS Speaker Modification Kits GPH-Y2K from DXE. This is JUST the replacement speaker, and NOT the foam kit.

I can't honestly say I hear much difference in the speaker? Maybe, but I'm not sure it's not just a "placebo" type affect. I paid 43 bucks for it. That's not horrible, but kind of pricey for a 4-5 inch speaker? It is 4 ohm, verses the factory 8 ohms. I think MAYBE I can hear a bit more difference in the high filter option on the SP 2000 now ....like one other reviewer noted? Maybe......

I also had a heck of a time getting the top of the SP 2000 apart. Screws came out easily. Then the fun REALLY began. Spent over an hour trying to pry the top apart to get access. Don't know if there is some kind of "trick" to doing that, but I really, really struggled. I didn't want to take a screw driver and pry it apart...as I didn't want any marks/scratches on my pristine condition SP 2000. I finally got it apart....after loosening the bottom (which the instructions said to do AFTER taking off the top)....and even then....it was a struggle...and yes....it did leave a few tiny mars/marks where i pried it open. bummer.......

So again, for the 43 bucks ....for just a speaker/driver upgrade....not sure that kit is really worth the money.........

Upgrades the SP-2000 Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The Yaesu SP-2000 speaker is basically a large empty metal cracker box, don't see how it gets such good reviews. Mine always had a tinny sound so decided to try the Phonema upgrade and ordered it from DXE. I was surprised at the weight of the material, it effectively doubles or triples the weight of the speaker. My speaker no longer slides easily on the desk. Installation requires taking the speaker apart and putting the foam inserts in the proper places and the fit is quite snug. It does indeed give the speaker a much richer and fuller sound, no more tinny sound. The filters definitely have more effect, especially the high cut filter, and on SSB signals.

Worth the money Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have just installed (with lots of help from the XYL) a nifty kit for the Yaesu SP-2000.

With this mod, Phonema completely refabricated the interior of the SP-2000, with the result that the speaker has a more solid and accurate sound. Atmospheric conditions of late have been horrific, with thunderstorms up and down the east coast as well as inland to the Mississippi, so I have not been able to fully road test the "new" SP-2000 on SSB.

Results so far are satisfying; I will submit a more comprehensive review in the fall after the QRN dies down.

Disappointed Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Just OK.
The speaker assemblies themselves have a great reputation.
This is only 1/2 the story, please see my review of the Icom SP-23.

In anticipation of the Icom 7610, I decided to get a new matching speaker.

Be advised, I have hundreds of external speakers thanks to a large, local charity store. It is hard to beat a Sony Surround Sound Speaker for $3!
But, being a true old fart, I like to have matching radios and speakers. The 7610 will replace my beloved 756PRO and SP-21. The 756PRO goes though an MFJ-616 (excellent, BTW), and some external speakers.
I found a like new SP-23 on ePay for an acceptable price. I decided to 'upgrade' it even though I've never used it.
So, I ordered the Phonema speaker upgrade for the SP-23.
When I disassembled the SP-23, I realized why the speaker 'might' have been for sale. See the SP-23 review for details.
The Phonema speaker kit contained just a replacement speaker with a slightly larger magnet and a foam spacer.
Darn if I could tell much difference, listening to the Icom speaker versus the Phonema, each out of the cabinet.
In retrospect, I'd have been better off getting a speaker from Parts Express or from ePay......

YMMV, as do your ears. ha ha
