Solid brick Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Of the older 2m Solid state amplifiers this is one of the better ones.

Available from the mid 1980s there were three versions in the range. The LA-2155H with 6-50W low/high input capability to use both current hand held and mobile rigs. Output was 150w. The LA-2155W (known as the LA2155E in Europe) 35w input for 150w out put and the LA2180 which for 50w input gave 180w output

The LA-2155E uses a pair of 2SC2694 output transistor to give 150w with 35 watts drive and unlike the devices used in MML and BNOS amplifiers here in the UK, the 2SC2694 is still available at reasonable prices. At full output the amplifier pulls 25amp.

Featuring a wacky circular illuminated power meter there are four substantial rocker switches on the front panel : Line ON, Rx amp ON, Delay ON, Output Lo/Hi. The rear panel features two SO239s for In/Out, an external PTT socket of equally weird parentage, a 25 amp fuse and a hard wired substantial power lead.

Provided you have exactly 13.8 volts at the amplifier the output will be as the specification for the various input levels maxing at 150w for 35w input. The heat-sink runs cooler than my equivalent BNOS amplifier due to the fact it is slightly larger. The rx preamp offers 15dB gain and can be useful in some situations but of course is no substitute for a well designed LNA at the mast head.

If you need 150 watts on 2m, make sure you antenna can handle it and go for one of these rugged bricks....if you can find one.
