Description:
The Cricket 80a is an improved version of the original Cricket: more power and an improved oscillator permitting use of wider range of crystals. It is a low cost entry level minimalist CW transceiver for the 80 meter band.

Simple Fun Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
A fully functional no frills 80 meter transceiver in less than two hours. Surprisingly sensitive receiver. Transmitter runs cool at about 1 watt output. The built in key works pretty good too. Fun to make QRPp contacts with!

Superb little kit! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Kudos to David Cripe, NM0S and the fine folks at the Four State QRP Group for producing this high quality kit.

This kit was conceived to fill a need within the hobby for an inexpensive, easy to build transceiver with performance a step above anything else available in this price range.

High quality, double sided printed circuit board construction is used, with solder mask and silk screened component reference designations. All components are through-hole for easy assembly. NO toroids are required. The CRICKET can be constructed by beginners as well as experienced builders. Construction time is approximately 1 - 2 hours, depending on experience level.

A couple of construction notes: 1) Install J4 (crystal holder) first, before any other components. That will make it easier to have the weight of the PCB hold J4 in place while you solder it. 2) Next, mount battery clips J5, J6 using a 9V battery to hold them in place while soldering. That will keep them properly aligned while soldering.

I am using this fine little rig with the MF Solutions 630 transceiver down-converter to create a simple yet effective CW rig for our new 630 meter band.
